THE COURTHOUSE--
The courthouse in located on the square around the corner from the library. LEAVE YOUR CAR
AT THE LIBRARY, YOU WON'T FIND PARKING ON THE SQUARE.
The courthouse is where you will find the office to purchase maps (2nd floor).A great map
is $10.00. Cash or check.
The courthouse is where you will find the health department.
This is where you can get death certificates. YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR CERTIFICATE THAT DAY.
(Regardless of what she is doing, the woman who works there won't do the work that
day). I have had other workers get mine that day, but she tells then "oh, you
don't have to just cause they are standing there".. so don't expect it. And,
YES she will tell you on the phone that you CAN get it that day.
ANYWAY--
At the health department they have books containing the death records. IF you are lucky,
they will let you look at those books if you ask.
If the death record is not in the book, then there will be no certificate. The information
in the book is the same as on the death certificate.
I always copy it down so I have the info while I wait for the certificate to be mailed to
me.
The data contained in the records book is-- NAME- BIRTH DATE--DEATH DATE & TIME--CAUSE
OF DEATH-- DOCTOR-- FUNERAL HOME-- BURIAL-- PARENTS NAME (sometimes).
Death Certificates are $5.00 and they take cash or checks.
Please be considerate and write down on each person-- Name, Date of Death, Place of Death
if known (of course it is Owen County, but if there are more then one person of that name,
then a township would be helpful).
I always write down parent's names (for the same above reason). Basically any
identifying information that would be helpful.
Depending on the county, the death certificates were began in different years. Owen County
was in 1882-BUT not all records were filed.
Depending on what county you go to you may need to have a relationship written down. Owen
County doesn't ask for it, but Monroe and Morgan do.
MARRIAGE RECORDS--
These are in a different office on the 2nd floor I believe it is.
The marriage records are in HUGE books in a cabinet. The books are labeled in different
year groupings.
Please take the information with you of the dates your ancestors were married.
They will allow you to look through the books and find the marriage record you want. You
then take it into the office and they will copy it for you.
The copies are $1.00 per page (they are either the whole page or 2 records on a page).
THEY ACCEPT CASH ONLY.
Some of these records contain information on the parents names and some don't.
I must repeat, you will NOT be able to find the record with just the names. The records
are kept in books according to the dates.
