Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society (OCH&GS)
Lloyd Smith to Give Historical Perspective of Whitehall.
January 15, 2008
Owen County Historical & Genealogical Society will be kicking off the new year with a
lively presentation on the town of Whitehall. As early as 1838 "White Hall" was
laid out for the purpose of securing a post office and a market place. The name was
changed to "Whitehall" in 1874.
Lloyd Smith is a long-time resident of Clay Township and has studied the early life of
Whitehall in detail and will be sharing his finds. Whitehall was once a thriving and
lively community and you will still find a few businesses and churches that are active and
successful. What remains is a small pleasant community that holds loads of memories.
The OCH&GS takes pride in presenting programs that invite sharing and participation by
everyone. Please come and join us and bring your own stories about Whitehall. Anyone
familiar with growing up in Clay Township and this rural community will enjoy hearing
Lloyd's historical perspective. He will be talking about many of the people who were
instrumental in the livelihood of Whitehall and the surrounding area, including parts of
both Monroe and Greene Counties.
Perhaps we can persuade Lloyd to talk about the mystery surrounding counterfeit money that
was found. Or, maybe he will share the story about his GGgrandfather who was injured in
the civil war and lived, along with other injured soldiers, on the Wabash River on a large
raft. Whether he chooses to talk about these or the many other historically based stories
he has researched, it should prove to be an entertaining event.
Everyone is invited to come to the Owen County Public Library’s meeting room on the upper
level on Tuesday January 15 at 7:00 pm, 10 S. Montgomery Street, Spencer, Indiana.
