Thank you. My nephew did the dna test for me and the test came back with
the indian connection might exist but it was probably a woman. And his dna
did not show it.
My grandmother was adamant about the "little bit of indian." She was not a
person to stretch the truth. Thank you for your information, it helps.

Subject: Re: [INOWEN] Cherokee DNA
Bev,
We in our family value our oral traditions. :)
We had an oral tradition of Native American in our bloodline. Our family
has
never been able to prove it 'on paper' because our Native people left
just
before the trail of tears and were never forced onto a reservation. That
branch of the family are often registered on the census records as
black,
mulatto
or Free Person Of Color. After much research through the years I learned
that many times, mixed blood people were referred to as Mulatto. In fact,
it was
a law in Virginia (if memory serves me).
Since we have no paper trail, and our people were never put on any Indian
Rolls or forced to the reservation, my brother decided to take the DNA
test.
And sure enough, our oral history proved to be true. At that time they
said
they could not tell which tribe, only that we do definitely have Native
American
in our family and 3% Asian - which they said is usually found in NA dna.
We
also have European dna since most of our family came over from Ireland.
It
was a validation of our oral history and confirmed what we have always
believed. We may never find out what 'tribe' since we have no paper
trail, but
perhaps, as DNA science advances they will be able to pinpoint that as
well.
My grandmother always said we were Cherokee or Blackfeet. The DNA test
could
not tell us if that is true or not. At least the one that my bro took
couldn't.

Your email is the first I have received that values "family" stories.
I thank you very much. We always felt our grandmother Clayton knew her
family history and the history of the man she married, Jesse Bolin, it
will
be interesting to see if I can find anything.
