The University of Illinois Library is now also the Illinois State Library, which is free
to any resident of the state of Illinois. I have a card now, which has been good for a
year, but about to expire unless I get in there and renew it. I suppose this has
superceded the arrangement with the genealogical society, as I have been a member of it
sometimes and have not heard of that.

So did I! As a matter of fact, I was a Charter Member of the Champaign
Co., IL Genealogical Society back about 1969! The Urbana Library has been
growing all these years! Nancy, years ago, if you were a county resident and a
member of the Genealogy Society you could also use the U of I Library.
Does this policy still stand? So much of my research was done from there..
For a census search back in 1969, I had to travel to Indianapolis from
Rantoul!

Nancy,
We live in Urbana, Illinois and have access to good archives at the
Urbana Free
Library. They are supported by the genealogical society and have
a great collection beyond our county and access to the Internet with
library version of
Ancestry.com and lots of other help to research. If your
Illinois travels bring you here, call and let me know.
If not, and you have some Illinois research that I could help with,
drop
me a line.
In Owen County you will find the Owen County Library in downtown
Spencer, Indiana, with an extensive collection of Owen County materials and
good
staff. They have good maps of the cemeteries with directions. Laura
Wilkerson is very helpful.
The motel is comfortable and pleasant.
Happy hunting.

I will be coming to Owen County in May from TX and would welcome
suggestions of
places to research and things to see. My grandfather, John Jacob
Welty
was born
in Morgan County and lived in Owen County from 1870 through 1880.
In
1900 he is
in Illinois.
