1923
The document, noted below, was copied word for word from a document on file
at the Indiana State Archives in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is part of a
record group identified as the "Secretary of States' Office, Corporations,"
Document No. 2129-10. All names were hand written. NOTE: That members of
horse thief associations have variously been called whitecappers.
We, the undersigned, desiring to form a Horse Thief Detective Association,
under the provisions of "An Act concerning the workings and institution of
detective associations," etc., approved March 9, 1907, do hereby make, sign
and acknowledge the following Articles of Association.
1. The name of this corporation shall be The Owen County Motor Rangers
Detectives Association, No. 284.
2. The corporation, not being for pecuniary profit, shall have no
capital stock.
3. The object of this corporation shall be for the purpose of
detecting and apprehending horse thieves and other felons and for mutual
protection and indemnity against the acts of such thieves and felons. The
plan of operating is through the election of a captain and the appointment
of lieutenants or deputies, all of whom are granted the powers of constables
by the statues under which this organization is incorporated.
4. The principal place of business, post office address, shall be
Spencer, Owen County, Indiana.
5. The term of existence, the organization not being for profit, shall
be perpetual.
6. The corporate seal shall be a circular disc, around the outer edge
of which shall be the name and number of the corporation and the name of the
county, and with the word "Seal" in the center.
7. The officers and trustees shall be elected by ballot vote of the
members of the corporation.
8. The number of trustees shall be three, and the names of the
trustees for the first year are: Joe A. Franklin, Iris (difficult to read)
O. Galimore; and James A. Johnson.

acknowledge the signing of the above Articles of Incorporation for the uses
and purposes therein set forth.
