I'm trying to locate some information on Reuben Jordan.
And in 1991 Roger Peterson (deceased) told me:
Reuben Jordan and his wife Nancy Beaman were the founders of the pioneer
Jordan families of Owen County, Indiana.
Reuben was born about 1801. Who his parents were or where they came from is
unknown to me. See the Beaman file for Nancy Beaman. There are three
possible choices for Reuben's background.
1. Montgomery County (N. C.) Heritage: Hunter Publishing Co. 1981,
Montgomery Co. Historical Society, page 261:
"Samuel Jordan arrived Jamestown, Va. from England in 1610. He and his
descendants were Quakers. By the latter half of the 18th century, descendants of
Samuel Jordan had moved to what is now in Moore and Montgomery Counties,
N.C. Early Montgomery land grants went to Francis Jordan and William Jordan in
1787."
Deeds and wills of Anson Co. N.C., Reprint 1980, Holcomb, Brent H.
Genealogical Publishing Co.
p. 122 Taxables for 1763, Esbell Jordon, widow for Frances and Ruben.
p. 7; 26 December 1749 land transaction. Witness-John Jordan.
2. River Jordan:
Anson Co. N.C. Abstracts of Early Deeds. McRee, Genealogical Publishing Co.
Baltimore Md. Reprint 1978.
p. 11 Grant 4025 East of Peedee, River Jordan.
Northampton Co. N.C. Probate of Wills and Administration 1753-1790,
Feb. (before 1763) Over Jordan, administrator on estate of River Jordan and
Pricilla Jordan, dec'd.
Research has been published on River Jordan whose ancestor Arthur Jordan b.
1627 in England immigrated to Surry Co. Va. by 1654. In 1723, River Jordan
was in Isle of Wight Co., Va.
3. Since Reuben was the only male Jordan to come in the large immigration
to Owen County from Montgomery County and he was married to a Beaman, the
chance remains that he was from the Quaker Jordans who went to Johnston Co. N.C.
from Northampton Co. N.C. with the Beamon family. This is least likely as
his sister came, as a wife of James Stephens, and a Sarah Jordan Hicks was the
mother of many Owen county Hick's. These families probably allied in
Montgomery county. (See these family folders)
