Shame on me when I said I only had one other person that contacted me
regarding Eliza. One of these days I'm going to sit down and put all my
saved e-mails in order..........looked in my file and there was the one from
you, you had mentioned Melba's book but that was about it. Everett Huber
was my great-grandfather and Clara Grube that she mentions was my great aunt
and she lived in Wheatfield, In. When I first started genealogy I contacted
Melba from information given me by a Minor (Ella Huber) that lived in
Wheatfield and knew she was working on the family line. I went down to
Greencastle and Melba took me all around to the cemeteries, and other things
she thought I might find interesting. Since I was just starting I didn't
have sense enough to make notes of things I wish I had now.
Thanks so much for the information, I'm going to print it out, so I can
study it, as that is the only way I can have things sink into my muddled
mind. It looks like there is quite a bit that I don't have. I knew Melba was
in the process of writing a book, do you have any idea where I might find
one?
Hope you like Iowa better than Indiana.........and that you're winter has
been better than ours, we have really had a lot of snow, in fact last night
we got another nine inches, and they are predicting snow almost every day
this week, hope it's just little flurries. Thanks again I really appreciate
it.
Madeline (by the way in case I never mentioned it I live in Valparaiso,
In)

Subject: [INOWEN] ELIZA DUNGAN
Hi Madeline: We corresponded some time ago, also, about Eliza
Dungan. I
sent you info. from 'The Trek of the Hubers' with info. about Eliza. I've
evidently deleted my notes to you, so maybe you've kept them??
------------------------------------------------
Fayette Co., IN Marriage Books: Eliza Dungan m: Levi Huber 8-9-1846; Book
E,
p. 347.
Levi and Eliza's children:
Eliza and Levi Huber's child, Florence Huber, is buried in Union Cemetery;
Fayette Co., IN - aged 15m, 12d; death 10-24-1849.
Francis William Huber, b. 11-6-1850 in Fayette Co., IN; death 7-23-1919;
buried Carolina Cemetery; Owen Co., IN
Everett Huber b. about 1852 (have no other info. on him) He lived in
Wheatfield, IN.
----------------------------------------------------------
>From 'The Trek of the Hubers' : by Melba (Huber) Haltom
"LEVI REED HUBER was born November 26, 1824 in Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania
and
died on October 6, 1899 in Morgan Twp., Owen Co. of a stroke of paralysis.
Dr. Kennedy, his nephew from Patricksburg, was the attending physician.
He
home was about a mile east of Jordan Village. Burial was in the Carolina
Cemetery.
He was first married to Eliza Dungan.
I have this information in a letter written by his daughter, Ethie, to
Mattie Fraizer, as told by her aunt, Hannah Mariah Huber. The letter says
that they lived in Connersville where he was a carpenter. She had very
black, curly hair and dark eyes and was very pretty. She liked to go to
dances and wear pretty silk dresses. Her son, Everett, looked much like
her
Aunt Mariah used to visit them at Connersville, according to Ethie. From
an old obituary saved by Clara Grube, she died October 28, 1855 and it is
believed he came to Owen County soon afterward as he needed someone to
care
for his 2 small boys, possibly his mother or sisters. He and Eliza had 3
children, the eldest one, a girl, having died at the age of 15 months and
12
days.
When he came to Owen Co., he soon got acquainted with John Lucas who
introduced him to his sister, Margaret Caroline, who was the daughter of
Marady Lucas and his second wife, Rebecca Haltom. She was from 2 pioneer
families -- Marady Lucas who settled in Owen County in 1833 and the
Haltomj
s who came during the late 1820's and 1830's. They were married in Owen
Co.
on June 23, 1856. She was 27 years old, having been born August 3, 1838.
She took in the motherless boys and cared for them as if they were her own
and they thought as much of her as if she were their own mother. She soon
had 8 of her own. She lived to be 97 years old. She is buried in the
Carolina Cemetery beside her husband. "
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Levi Huber's parents:
"Jacob Huber, the youngest son of Anthony, is my remote ancestor. The
earliest record of him in America is when he married Sarah Hollingsworth
on
June 13, 1824 and the birth of the oldest son, Levi, on November 27, 1824,
both events occurring in Lebanon, Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania. Jacob and
Sarah's marriage is recorded in the records of the Tabor Reformed Church.
His 4 oldest were all born in Pennsylvania but the 5th--Hannah
Mariah--according to the cencus records, was born in Ohio. All of the
rest
were born in Indiana.
I don't know when they decided to leave Pennsylvania but it couldn't have
been before John's death in 1831. We have a record of Jacob purchasing
land
in Fayette County, IN from Charles Hubbard on August 4, 1836 and selling
it
to W.C. Jones on August 4, 1849 for $950, so his sojourn in Ohio was
short--between 1831 and 1836 at the most. . . . .
Jacob next bought land in Owen Co. on June 22, 1850, which is recorded in
Deed Book (1850-1852), P. 19 and described as purchased from Benjamin F.
Cromwell, the East half of the Northwest quarter of Section 14, Township
11
and lived in the log house that was already on the place for the rest of
his
days. Wm. Henry must have acquired the 80 acre farm because a long-time
resident of the Jordan Village community says that he and his second wife,
Margaret "Maggie" (Price) Huber used to live there.
Jacob and his wife were both laid to rest in the Olive Hill Cemetery south
of their home where other members of their family and friends are buried.

Obituary - Levi Huber
Death of Levi Huber, the subject of this sketch, was born in Lebanon, Pa.
on
November 27, 1824 and departed this life on October 6, 1899, age 74 years,
11 months and 8 days. He was united in marriage to ELIZA DUNGAN August 9,
1846. To this union was born 3 children. His wife was deceased October
28,
1855. He was again united in marriage with margaret C. Lucas September
23,
1858 (sic) and to this union were born 8 children, two of whom have
preceded
him to the better land.
He was a man highly esteemed among his people as was shown forth by his
holding office for over 20 years. He joined the United Brethren Church
about the year 1871 and about 5 years later he united with the Missionary
Baptist Church at New Union, near his place, and lived and died in the
same.
In a short time after he joined this church he said to his family that he
was going to turn over a new leaf--that is, he was going to live a new
life,
and he would begin by returning thanks, and he kept up as long as he
lived.
The funeral services were conducted by Elder bowman, assisted by Elder
Holmes of Morgan County and Elder Kerr of Vandalia. After the funeral
services the body was laid to rest in the New Union Cemetery until the
morn
of the great resurrection.
(A clipping saved by Clara Grube, only remaining daughter of Everett
Huber.
She will be 101 in February 1985)...

Well, Madeline, this just gets longer and longer.... smile.. If we only
had
an obit. for ELIZA DUNGAN - Oct. 28, 1855.
I wonder if she was a daughter of Isaac & Mary Dungan who are buried in
Brownsville Christian Union Cemetery; Union Co., IN
Isaac Dungan died 9-25-1855. Mary died in 1863 and in her will, she
leaves
everything to her son, James W. Dungan..
I have Dungan, Hoffa, Price, Strong, Huber, Long ancestors and they all
were
interwoven with one another, by marriage, etc.
Best Regards, Nancee (McMurtrey)Seifert at iggy29(a)grm.net
(I just moved to Iowa from Indiana last July.)
