Mine was a trojan and a some hostile file wiping software. I kept my
default download directory on the external, and that is where the
infection started. I have no evidence that it was Betty's email that was
responsible, and since the HD was incredibly scrambled, I had no choice
but to do a full reformat. Data Recovery kept coming up infected.
I have three different Anti-virus programs I run in alternation and two
spyware removers. I THINK it was a spyware remover hoax site that
installed the virus. One that installs a virus in an attempt to get you
to pay them to cure it.
Homey don't buy that horse.
Its not the first time I have had this happen, but it is the first time
I had alternate back ups of the essential files on another EX-HD.
The LOSS seems to be my 20,000 file Music collection. Which I am
attempting to restore from my CD-Rom back-ups and what is in my Zune.

Regarding the appearance of the bad email yesterday from Betty Dickinson I have spoken
with her just now.
She has cleaned her system and has scanned virus free from MacAfee several times today.
She has deleted the WeGame from her computer prior to that.
This program/whatever was given to her by her sister, who received it from someone in the
Phiilipines who apparently uses this system to send photos, etc as that is what she was
attempting to do with Betty's sister.
Betty is stating that this was not a virus or at least not showing on her system. Her
virus scanner is up to date.
I checked MacAfee's site regarding viruses and it doesn't appear on there
either.
For those of you having lost data upon restart, I am at a loss as to that. It could be
something else entirely. I don't know about any of your scanning systems.
I am in new territory here with this one.
Just delete everything and anything pertaining to her email such as your deleted email
box as well as your "sent" box.
Run a virus scan.
This does provide an excellent opportunity to stress to everyone the importance of the
basic rules of emails on the mailing list.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER-- open an email from someone you don't know. I have an
excuse at least because I deal with 220 persons on this list and know all of them.
Everyone should know your main core of people that you deal with regularly, we all have
them. But even still.....
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER-- open an email with an attachment or mention of a photo THAT
YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING.
A few years back I covered this with everyone and have found that the practice of placing
-attachment enclosed- in the subject line lets the receiver know that there is
intentionally something attached to the email and it is not computer generated through a
virus.
I also try to get it in the first sentence, "I am sending you an attachment".
It is normally previously expected.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER- open an email with ANY attachment or any mention of a photo
that is addressed to the mailing list email system. This should have been flagged and
filtered out by the Rootsweb filtering system. It wasn't.
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS-- if you are in question of something LOOK at the addressing
system on your email. The thing that tipped me off was it was addressed to
Admin-OwenL(a)rootsweb.com I only receive emails from them from Rootsweb, not an
individual. Everyone has my personal email, so although I knew Betty and had corresponded
with her in the past, it still set off a red flag.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER -- contact the person that the email came from. If there is a virus,
then connecting your PC's is just going to enhance the problem. Betty stated that
several had contacted her asking about the problem. Likewise, NEVER send an email to
someone to warn them not to open your emails because you have a virus-- this just sets
them up for one. I have seen that practice also, although it would appear that common
sense would tell them not to open it.
THIS ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE PEOPLE-- this is your computer, take proper precautions.
DON'T open emails containing attachments or mentions of photos from people you
don't know or at least are not expecting it from. Although we on this list may never
experience this again, I am sure if this is out there, then it is possible so remember
these rules for the next occurence.
Fortunately list activity has been slim enough that we can stop and take notice of all
emails coming in.
ps. after completing all this I am in the process of updating the website tonight.
