Caroline,
I'm sure this is not all-inclusive of all Owen County will/probate
records but I checked a publication called "Owen County, Indiana Will
Abstracts 1819-1861". The only Smith in it was "Samuel Smith" married
to Mary Smith. There is a "John C. Smydth" in it with a wife named
Margaret and two sons: William C. & David K. His will was witnessed
by William M. Smith and it is dated 15 Feb, 1852. There are no
Gibsons listed in the book.

Debbie:
William Kerr, my ggggrandfather, (William, Eli, John F, John E,) was a
Justice of the Peace in Owen county Indiana in the mid to late 1840's. Is
there any way to find out how he was appointed or elected to that position?

Go to this page
http://www.sweetowen.net/OCHGShomepage.html
Search for the name Smith and look in the first column for heirs and the
other column named File Folder.
This will tell you if there is anything held on file at the archives in Owen
County. It is possible that there was no Will.

The Phillips were neighbors of John G. Long. He is buried in the Phillips
Cemetery.

Still am in need of a look up of a will/
probate for John and Hannah (Gibson)
Smith prior to 1860. Seems the children
were fostered out prior to their each
marrying.

THANKS so much to all who have helped
me with my research. Hard to get to IN
from WY when my health is not all that
great. Helps to have people that are
willing to step up to the plate and assist
those who can not get to various places.
Have a great New Years
