Subject: Re: [INOWEN] River running through Owen Co......the Narrows & the Shallows
I found this in the Booklet, Wander Owen County by Russell L. Hamm.....this
one 1990
Just to go along with the information on the Narrows of White River.....
Washington Twp. The Narrows
ladys Laymon showed me a picture of the Narrows; and I was surprised to see the
ailroad tracks dominating the picture; and between the railroad tracks and the
hite River was a roadway. I had always assumed that "The Narrows" referred to
he river. There are only two places where the railroad ran in close proximity
o the river--immediate north of the new 43-46 bridge, and across White River
rom the western most edge of McCormick's Creek Park.
So by a more recent look.....I would venture to say that either of those places
ight be the area of where those Old Narrows of the River were. Just found this
ind of interesting.
Also farther along it states:
The Shallows
n the 1820's, three ferries operated in the environs of Spencer:The Adam Briton
erry at Munday's Station {Romona};Isaiah Cooper's Ferry at Spencer {I assume
his is where the iron bridge is today.}; and John Dunn's Ferry at the south end
f the "Narrows". I visited the ramp at the public access site--just off River
oad, and I noted a large sandbar across the river. Perhaps this is the site of
unn's Ferry. Perhaps this is where the earliest pioneers forded White River.
