Hi Debbie,
To follow up on the marriage of a Mary R. Carter to Joseph Hession in Monroe
County in 1875, I checked the 1880 census, and found a Joseph and Mary
Hession living in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. They were both 25 (the
right age for a Mary Carter born in 1855). Mary and both her parents were
born in Indiana; Joseph was born in Indiana but his parents were born in
Ireland. He worked on the railroad. By 1900, Joseph is once again living
in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, age 46 (born Feb. 1854) and is now a
bartender. His wife is Della, born March 1854 and they have been married 10
years. That would fit with Mary's death between 1880 and 1890. There is a
marriage record for Joseph Hession (son of John and Mary Tooney Hession) to
Della Emery (daughter of John Balley and Clara Hughes Balley; Della may have
been married before to an Emery) on 21 Jul 1890 in Monroe County (_Monroe
County Indiana Marriage Records 1882-1920_) recorded in Monroe County
Marriage book 08, page 144. Interestingly, there is also a marriage record
for Joseph Hession (same parents) to Julia K. Woodall (daughter of Oliver
and Ary Stockwell Woodall) on 08 Mar 1883 in the same book, recorded in
Monroe County Marriage book 08, page 098. It looks as if Mary, his first
wife, died before March 1883.
I also checked cemetery books for Monroe County, and found a John Hession
buried at Rose Hill cemetery with a death date of 22 Aug 1868, age indicated
with a ? and the notation that the stone is broken; possibly Joseph's
father. I didn't find a listing for a Mary Hession. However, in the WPA
index on the Monroe County Genweb site, there is a listing for a Mark
Hession, age 9 months, who died on 4 Nov 1884 in Bloomington, as well as a
Mrs. Joseph Hession (Della?), who died at age 51 on 11 Oct. 1906 and a
Joseph M. Hession who died at age 56, on 18 Sep 1910 in Bloomington. It may
be that Mary Carter Hession died in Floyd County, Indiana; could she have
been the mother of the baby Mark who died? It could be that the death
certificate for Mark Hession would give that information. It should be
available from the Health Department in Bloomington. The certificate is
recorded in book H-12, page 11. Joseph's death certiicate is recorded in
Book H-19, page 34.
I would be interested in knowing if this works out to be your Mary R.
Carter. I have a connection to Oliver Woodall in my family.

Okay listmembers this is a long shot question but who knows, it might hit
something.
Does anyone have this person married into their family lineages.
Mary R. Carter b. March 3, 1855 in Harrison Township, Owen County, IN She
appears in the 1870 census of her mother's home, but she is no longer there
in the 1880 census so I feel that she must have married.
I feel that this marriage most likely occurred in the Owen-Morgan or Putnam
County areas, possibly even Monroe county.
I am confident that the R. stands for Rosa/Rose or Rosella.
She was dead by the 1900 census taking.
Her brother died in 1893 and is buried properly in Mannan Cemetery with a
large stone.
Their mother is buried under that same stone in 1920.
I have not found any obit or death record under Carter, so therefore the
assumption of marriage.
She was actually a twin sister of Eliza Jane (Carter) Truax Secrest.
However in Eliza's obituary she is only referenced that Eliza had a sister
who died a number of years ago (that obit was in 1925).
