Greetings Everyone:
I, too, am disappointed about the 2010 Census lack of questions asked.
Was so willing to answer!
Nevertheless, being the family historian, first - loved the idea others
offered - yes, I will scan and copy the 2010 Census pages to keep in my
file.
Next, why not take our own Census?!
I am going to customize my own Mini Life History Family Census and
record the information re my husband, myself, our six children and their
spouses, and our 15 grandchildren - a new sheet for each in their own
family. I'm thinking I will use all the questions asked on the 1900
Census - easily found on the Internet - and then customize it for
additional information. Considering sending the questions to each of my
grandchildren - special letter from their Grandmother who is interested
in their lives.
Using the 1900 census form - here are my ideas.
State, County, City or Township. Enumeration Date
Address.
List every member of the family and anyone else living in the home.
Relationship of everyone to head of family.
Color, Sex, Date of Birth, Age at last birthday.
Whether single, married, widowed, divorced.
Number of years of present marriage.
Mother of how many children.
Number of those children living. (This # has helped me find MANY
'missing' babies in my research!)
Nativity: Place of birth of each person and parents of each person
enumerated. If born in United States, give state or territory. If
foreign born, give country: Place of birth of this person. Place of
birth of Father of this person. Place of birth of Mother of this person.
Citizenship: Year of immigration to the U.S.
Number of years in the U.S.
Naturalization.
Occupation, Trade, or Profession of each person TEN YEARS of age and over.
Occupation.
Months not employed.
Attended School (in months) I will add in name of school, grade, maybe
teacher's name.
Can read. Can Write, Can speak English or other foreign language.
Ownership of Home
Owned or rented.
Owned free or mortgaged.
Farm or house
And any additional notes you desire, i.e. just got driver's license;
just broke arm on the monkey bars at school
Goals for the next 10 years: i.e. pay off home next year; earn
volleyball scholarship to attend college; graduate college in two years;
earn an A in German - etc etc.
You get the idea. No one said we can't take our own census.
My 8 year old granddaughter is involved with the "Flat Stanley" project
at her elementary school - where each child colors several pictures of
Flat Stanley, then mails the pictures outside the state asking the
recipient to return Flat Stanley with a some information about the place
they live. Idea is to learn about other places in the world. I'm going
to suggest her teacher do a 2010 Census project - and have the children
gather information about their families and where they have lived, the
education they have received, and the languages they speak. Could help
greatly with 'connecting families.
Also - do hope all of you are watching the Friday night NBC series Who
Do You Think You Are. Tonight is the 3rd episode. This is causing an
explosion of interest in genealogy research! Felt to share.
THANK YOU for all you do - all who contribute to your site!

Someone suggested to me that we all copy the pages we enter in the
new
census, to save for our own future generations. IF we have that paper among our
possessions our grandchildren won't have to wait 75 years to see what was
in this census! I was disappointed in the facts requested of us too.

I am excited and disappointed at the same time.
I finally got my 2010 Census and was excited about the prospect of filling
it out as we deal with it so much in our research.
I felt it a duty to future generations. However, the information asked for
was rather void of any real content compared with years past.
They don't ask any of the questions that they used to ask, no occupation
or anything like that.
Anyway...
I have recently taken over doing the website for the Owen County
Historical and Genealogical Society.
The new URL for anyone looking for it is--
http://www.sweetowen.net/OCHGShomepage.html
I also realize that I have been slack in updating the Sweet Owen site
lately and the reasoning is due to building the site for the Society as well as
I have been going through the Sweet Owen site and cleaning up errors,
missing pages, bad links, and generally anything that looks bad.
If you have any corrections to your surname searches, this is the time to
send them to me as I am completely going through the site page by page. It
is quite a task though.
If you do however decide to send any corrections to your surnames PLEASE
be very clear what you are sending so that I can store it properly until it
is entered.
Please place SURNAME CORRECTIONS in your subject line.
Likewise if there are any email changes place EMAIL CHANGES in your
subject line.
I PROMISE-- I will return to updating the website as soon as possible. I
just got tired of constantly coming up against bad links or anything of that
sort.
I have also as of Sunday created a page for the Sweet Owen and Surrounding
Areas on FACEBOOK.
The location is --
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sweet-Owen-and-Surrounding-Areas/3690627971...
Just go there and click on "become a fan".
If you aren't a member, please consider joining facebook, it is simple and
again free.
This will give us another avenue to post queries or just anything. Not so
structured as the mailing list. Perhaps more viewers to your searches.
As I can I will throw obituaries on there or just any little thing
pertaining to research. Perhaps announcements about website updates or other stuff.
I don't know how many of your have Facebook, but it was just a thought
that perhaps it would serve us well.
It is free and IF EVER Rootsweb changes or as it is connected to Ancestry,
it becomes any kind of pay service, this would provide us with an avenue
for free positng. That is why I created the website on a different server in
order to have that control. This Facebook will remain regardless of what
may ever happen with Rootsweb/Ancestry. (No, I haven't heard anything.)
Photos may also be placed on there. I haven't really got anything there
right now, just the page. The more people who visit though, they can add
stuff maybe.
