John
I have checked the census records for 1840 and 1850 for a Dr. Ross in
Gosport and have not found anything.
The only Dr. Ross I know of during that time was a Dr. William Ross who is
buried in the old Asher cemetery.
He died in September of 1846, but he was only a little over 30 years old at
that time. He must have been quite
accomplished though as I have seen his gravesite and it is a huge slab
completely covered with writing.
He was from Gosport. He is mentioned in the book Owen County 1884 simply as
one of the early doctors.
I do know that in those early years a man could "become" a doctor by being
an understudy of a doctor for a certain period.
I realize that this helps you very little.
I have no idea what YOP stands for but would imagine it is Years of
Practice perhaps under these two men that offered affidavits...
This could perhaps refer to years that he "studied" under them as was
probably prerequisite for entrance to any formal school.
These also could be men who certified that they were his professors for that
year in order for him to continue under the "new law"
you mention.
I have looked under various websites for acronyms but that one doesn't
appear.
It would be my guess (and it is just a guess) but those years listed after
Board of Health would indeed be years of license.
I don't know what the numbers mean that you found in the record, but you
might try finding out where that record was issued from
and I am certain they would know.
You also might try the State Archives in Indianapolis and they may be able
to tell you who would house those records, it may be
a matter of connecting with the actual school of instruction.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Hester1840-1890
I apologize if you received this request before. I believe that I had
mistyped
the rootsweb address originally.
I am looking for help in understanding Dr. Uriah Hester's (Sometimes
misspelled
at Dr. W. A. Hester) medical training.
He practiced in Gosport and later in Arney during the years of 1840
through
1890.
He was an understudy of a Dr. Ross in the 1840's in Gosport. Does anyone
know
Dr. Ross's first Name?)
Also a Dr. Baker who later practiced in Brazil, In. was an understudy and
friend
of Dr. Hester in Arney in the 1870's.
Question: How can I get the history of Dr. Baker? (I do not know his first
name)
In the 1860's Dr. George Naanes was an understudy to Dr. Hester at Gosport
and
later at Arney, In??
In 1864 Dr. Hester attended medical School at the Cincinnati College of
Medicine and Surgery.
Note: A new law required additional training to practice medicine.
I am looking for help to understand the following taken from a Owen County
Record:
Name:Hester,U.A.V.
Residence Owen(Arney)
Medical Schools 265//10 (What do these numbers mean? Are they page
references?
If so, to what book?
YOP-Affidavits of HHalbert and E.J.Barton.C. /School Years 1864 (What does
YOP
mean?)
Question: Who was Halbert & Barton? What was their Profession? What was
the
name of the School?
Note: Ind. State Board of Health 1882, 1884, P1886, 1890
Question: What do these years reference? Was it certification to practice
medicine?
Sources: Owen County License p. 14, 8.27.1885
Dr. Uriah Hester was my grandfather.
Also any history about Dr. Hester before 1840? His father was Matthias
Hester
and Uriah was the youngest of 12 Children.
Uriah was born in Charlestown, In.
I know I have asked a lot of questions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
