This is appearing on your Owen County Genealogical page because a member of
this list was kind enough to post a notice of historical significance.
It is imperative that we not project our contemporary viewpoints into
historical events. As a student of history at Indiana Unversity a lesson
drummed into us at was that we learn the concept of "zeitgeist." Basically
this means that we must not judge history but understand the events in their
time frame.
Yes, I was surprised to learn that my Quaker grandfather was a member of the
KKK. Upon further research I learned that in his community (Rush County
Indiana) it was merely a men's social club; not the violent or even
vitriolic messengers we think of.
As genealogists we must be very careful not put our prejudices upon the
activities and events of our ancestors.
