Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society (OCHGS)
Meeting March 18, 2008 - Patricksburg Elementary School
Panel of Patricksburg, Indiana Residents
“Patricksburg Memories Shared”
Patricksburg, Indiana is located in Marion Township, Owen County, Indiana on Highway 246.
When Marion Township was originally formed in 1835, it was known as Grayson. Settlement
of this area actually began in 1832 and at one time Patricksburg was perhaps the largest
settlement in Owen County. Patricksburg had been known as Lancaster until the post office
opened in May of 1854. It was then the name change took place to honor Patrick Sullivan
who platted the town.
After the Civil War, Patricksburg was a thriving community and boasted many stores and
businesses. There was a sawmill, a cooper’s shop, a harness shop, wagon factories,
shoemakers and blacksmiths. In its heyday, the wagon factory built over 700 wagons.
There were over 400 people living and working in Patricksburg.
Disaster struck the week of July 28, 1926 when a fire wiped out several homes and 22
buildings in the business section of the town. Patricksburg changed forever that day and,
despite efforts to rebuild, the town never fully recovered.
Please note: The meeting location has changed for this month. By popular demand, we are
meeting at the Patricksburg Elementary School in Patricksburg on Hwy 246. Come share
your own stories or just sit back and enjoy hearing the panel talk of their memories.
Join us on March 18th at 7:00 pm, Hwy 246, Patricksburg, Indiana.
