My wife, Joan, is a Slough and we have been researching her line for about
six years now and hopefully someone can help us.
Robert Edward Slough was Joan's great grandfather and we had been unable to
locate his parents until this last weekend. Family tradition is that soon
after Robert was born his mother passed away and that his father went west
to the gold fields and now we have proven that to be true.
We located Robert and his parents in the 1850 Greene County, IN census when
Robert was one month old. His parents were Hamilton and Priscilla Slough. In
the census they had Slaugh. In 1860 Robert was living with a Daniel Ingersol
family in Greene County. We also found were Priscilla Campbell married
Hamilton Slough on July 26, 1849 in Monroe County, IN.
We found Hamilton in the 1860 California census and in Nevada in the 1870
and 1880 census. All four census state that Hamilton was born in KY and the
1880 census states that his parents were both born in North Carolina.
Here is were I need your help. I feel very strong that Hamilton was the son
of Abraham of Owens County and he was born while the Sloughs were moving
from NC to IN.
In the 1840 IN census there were only four families named Slough and they
were all in Owens. The only one that had a male of the right age group was
Henry and we know that he was too young to be Hamilton's father. By the way,
Hamilton was born about 1828. I feel that in this census Abraham JR was
living with his father and Hamilton was living with his brother Henry to
help on the farm.
Does anyone have an index of wills or probate records that show a Hamilton
or Robert Slough or a Priscilla Campbell?
Also any deed for buying or selling land.
Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Ken & Joan
