I'm trying to discover exactly when and where WILLIAM HARROD died. Here's
what I know about his later years in Monroe and Owen County:
1821 Union Church in Wayne Twp., Owen County was formed. Among the charter
members were James DOWDIN and wife (Rachel HARROD), Zachariah DOWDEN and
wife (Catherine HARROD), and Thomas C. JOHNSON and wife (Letitia HARROD) per
History of Owen County, Indiana page 716.
1830 Monroe County Census: William HARED page 32 and George HERROD page
286.
7 Nov. 1832 Scott Co., IN: William HARROD filed his Revolutionary War
Pension application.
31 August 1834 Thomas C. JOHNSON was a charter member of the Spencer
Christian Church in Owen Co., IN.
ca. 1836 a village in Clear Creek Twp., Monroe Co., IN near Lawrence County
was laid out by Alexander BUCHANAN and John SEDWICK named Newgene (later the
name was changed to Harrodsburg). An Alexander BUCHANAN of Ayer Twp.,
Cumberland Co., PA sold land to William HARROD on 24 March 1767.
ca. 1837 the village of Newgene was changed to Harrodsburg.
1840 census a man of William HARROD's age was in the household of Zachariah
DOWDIN, Owen Co., Indiana. (Zachariah's father was older than the man in his
household.)
8 Sept. 1843 Owen Co., IN: William HARROD wrote a letter in 1843 in which he
stated that his health was failing and he didn't expect to live much longer.
1 July 1852 A William HARROD's death was reported in the Christian Record by
H.H. Combs in a letter dated "Clark Co., Ind., July 1, 1852." Bro. Mathes, I
will inform you of the death of my old friend Wm. HARROD, who was one of our
best citizens, and a man of high standing among all the people. He was a
good neighbor, and a moral man, though not a member of any church. He was
liberal in his support of the gospel, erecting meeting houses, etc., and
always the friend of common schools. He died of cholera on his way to Iowa,
leaving a wife and eight children, together with a large circle of friends
and neighbors to mourn his loss." On page 113 of "Historic Treasures" by
Forest M. "Pop" Hall, copyright 1922, (a history of Bloomington, Indiana) is
the following, "About this time [1838?] Elder James MATHES published a
monthly periodical called the 'Christian record' in the interests of the
Christian Church.
A deed was recorded in Owen Co., IN on 3 Oct. 1854 by James M. MATHES and
his wife Sophia, conveying land to William B. HARROLD. The deed included
several parcels of land, all in Owen Co., Indiana including some that
adjoined land also granted that day by the same couple to William H. DOWDEN,
a quarter section in Twp. 23.)
I would appreciate any additional information about exactly where and when
William HARROD died, where and when his wife Letitia (COMBS) HARROD died or
any additional details of their lives in Owen and Monroe Counties.
