Thanks to all those who responded to my questions about the New Union (Little Flock,
Carolina) Baptist Church in Morgan
Township. It was enlightening to learn of the background of the Beamans and others who
formed this congregation which my
GGGrandparents (Silas and Elizabeth JONES) joined in 1843. Since the JONES family migrated
into OwenCounty as a group in
1825-26 and joined the Little Mount Baptist Church (founded by family member, Rev. John
JONES), I was curious about why they
joined a sister church. I am speculating they found cultural as well as religious
fellowship at this Carolina Church which had
so many members from this southern state.
My JONES clan had a long religious history in Southampton County, Virginia which was
partly political. They were members
of the David Barrow Black Creek Baptist Church which was racked by controversy over his
abolishionist views. He was physically
as well as politically assaulted so he moved to Montgomery County Kentucky in 1798. My rev
war ancestor, Mathew Jones and his
sister, Sarah Jones Johnson followed this Baptist congregation to Kaintuck. There was
political controversy in Kaintuck as
well so son John Jones moved on to Owen County ahead of the family group in 1824. He was a
regular Baptist minister who
founded Little Mount and several churches Hendricks County. The rest of the Joneses
(Thomas, 1785-1859, Wiley, 1792-1855, John
1801-1860, Beasant, 1798-aft 1860, Sally, 1805-?, Matthew Jr., 1796-?) went with Mathew
Sr. to join John in 1825. Silas
(1814-1911), son of Thomas must have been Baptized at Little Mount but changed his
affiliation a few eeks after Elizabeth in
1843. She was the daughter of judge Thomas Allen who I assume was also Baptist. Silas was
a rather contentious man as judged
by his many law suits in Owen County, so after judge Allen died in 1843, I speculate Silas
and Elizabeth may have looked for a
new group to fellowship with. Perhaps they found comfort with these fellow southerners who
I wonder may have been similar in
religious/political belief. Since the Beamans were formerly Quakers, and many Quakers
became Baptists, maybe this was an
abolitionist group who dissented with the predominant system in their native North
Carolina. All speculation but what the
heck. I find it fascinating to guess at what make my ancestors and their neighbors take
such severe risks in their migration
into new lands. I would enjoy speculating with list members who may have ideas as to what
made this early congregation

I found recently that my GGGGrandfather, Silas W.R. JONES was a member
of the New Union (aka Little Flock or Carolina) Church, 1844-1853. The
entries in the church log appeared to be every 4th Saturday and relate
to church business. Was this a vestry meeting? Also does anyone know
what type of early Baptists Rev Beaman led? I have heard various rather
curious terms such as "Regular, Seperate, New Lights, Hard Shell, etc".
Thanks for any information you can offer on this group.
This is probably Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church located 10 miles south of
Spencer on SR 43. Organized in 1842 near Union School. The church "log"
appears to have been the Church Clerk's recording of the business meeting. Each
Baptist Church is independent and conducts their business by a meeting of the
entire congregation. Since they are independent it results in a lot of
different names "Primitive", "Regular"
etc. Haven't heard "Hard Shell" recently, but I'm sure there are
some. Their
is more information on this church in the "Owen County History " published in
1994.

The naming of this church falls into line with where my Harlow Greatgreatgrand
parents are rumored to have came from. NorthCarolina has appeared on some of
the old death certificates, my Joshua Harlow died in Owen Co in 1848.
