Jay,
Ginseng most certainly grows in Owen County IN and several surrounding
counties. I've hunted it primarily in Monroe and Lawrence Counties
because that's where I've lived. Ginseng can also be found in
Kentucky. There is a hunting "season" and sang cannot be sold except in
season. The season starts August 15 and the root sells for a very good
price. Sorry, I don't know the current price.
Bloodroot and yellowroot are also hunted and sold, but the selling price
is much lower. In the last few years, especially since the local
newspapers have had articles quoting the price being paid for sang, the
woods are full of hunters and it is becoming increasingly hard to find.
After digging the root, the seeds need to be replanted, but many novice
hunters fail to do so. And, around here, woods are becoming scarce!
Housing developments are more prevalent.
