OBJECTIVE: To find out what happened to Charles Murphy and when. Or where he
is buried. Is he the one listed in the 1842 probate records.
Charles MURPHY b. about 1760-1770 and thought to be the son of John and
Sarah. Charles was born in Montgomery County MD and served in the Rev War.
Charles migrated with others in his family to Nelson county KY sometime
prior to 1794.
It appears that Charles purchased land on Simpson Creek from Hezekiah (his
brother) in 1793 and was still residing in Nelson county when deed was
recorded in 1831. Although he doesn't show in any census after 1830, he does
appear in court in November of 1832 to swear to his brother's military
services.
Charles is shown in the 1830 census of Nelson county KY with 3 sons and 3
daughters at home and he was also the father of three other children of whom
he had signed consent/surety to marry, these were
Peggy (Margaret) named as his daughter who married Levi Mills; Polly (Mary)
who married McKinney Baldwin and Burgess who Charles signed the consent for
at the time of his marriage to Lucinda Dyer.
These were all Nelson county KY marriages.
In the 1840 census for Harrison township of Owen county,Charles is found
living in a line surrounded by 3 of his children.
1.McKinney BALDWIN with wife Mary Ann (Murphy) and children
2.Charles MURPHY (apparently alone)
3.Margaret (Murphy) and second husband William CRUTCHFIELD and family
4.Benjamin MURPHY with wife, Cynthia TRUAX(d/o Wm & Ailcy) and family
As for a follow up on these families;
1. McKinney died March 18, 1856 and his wife is later found in the 1860
census residing in the home of their daughter Lucinda and her husband
Ludwell M. Combs(s/o Wm C. Combs).
2. Charles I am unsure just what became of him, but there is an entry in the
Owen county probate records for a Charles Murphy in 1842, but I don't know
if this is the same one as there were other Charles in the area. I can find
no burial location for Charles anywhere and he doesn't appear in the later
census records in any of his children's home.
3. Margaret and husband William Crutchfield I find no later census records
for, neither do I find any burials.
4. Benjamin was mustered in the service of the United States at
Jeffersonville, Indiana, June the 14th day 1847 for the term of the war with
Mexico and served as a private in Company G of the 4th Regiment Indiana
Volunteers. The company muster roll lists him as a teamster from August 2,
1847 until his discharge on Feb. 21, 1848. The family settled in Monroe
county IN where they are found in the 1850 census and remained there until
Benjamin's death.
