Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society (OCHGS)
Meeting May 15th, 2007
"Gwen Dieter to speak about the
Soil & Water Conservation Program... from the Dust Bowl to today"
Gwen Dieter, district coordinator and environmental educator for Owen County Soil &
Water Conservation District Office (SWCD) will talk about how the soil & water
conservation movement came about with the disastrous dust bowl event. She will also talk
about what to expect in the future in Owen County if we continue our present practices and
policies. There will also be information given about President Roosevelt's CCC program
and the work done by the corps.
Dieter has been involved with many efforts to improve water quality by changing farming
practices in the area. Some of the programs revolved around conservation tillage, nutrient
management, pest management, and conservation buffers, and control of source pollution.
The practices are leading to better soil, cleaner water, greater profits and a brighter
future in Owen County,
Last fall, as part of an education series, Dieter connected SWCD and the Owen County
Library and things happened on a large scale. She provided training for a Tree Steward
course in which there were 30 participants. Another educational series involved a
workshop on Basic Tree Care. She was also involved with a very successful Arbor Day
planting program.
Everyone is invited to come to the Owen County Public Library's meeting room on the
upper level and listen to Gwen Dieter's presentation. Bring your own questions and
get advice from the professional! Join us on May 15th at 7:00 pm, 10 S. Montgomery
Street, Spencer, Indiana.
Best Regards,
