Hi Everyone:
I have just uploaded a small part of an 1888 Indiana map showing Owen
County. I have added the Township and Range numbers in Turquoise. The Range
numbers are waaaay up at the northern boundary of the state and not visible
when I cropped to just Owen County. The Township numbers are very small and
shown on the right hand side of the Owen County map.

From this map, I noticed that the town of Cataract is on the northern edge
of T11N R4W.
I went to topozone and located Cataract, from there I navigated down to Sec.
31. I placed a red+ (off-center so you can see the 31 in the section:

His land is roughly in the center of that section.

Hi, Dick -
I did a fast search on the
glorecords.blm.gov web site.
A John Carter in Owen County is listed for the following land purchases:
1-4-1831 80 Acres W 1/2 SE 1/4 of Sec 31 11N 4W
8-15-1837 40 Acres SW 1/4 NE 1/4 of Sec 31 11N 4W
5-10-1848 30 Acres NE 1/4 SW 1/4 of Sec 31 11N 4W *
* As he only bought 30 acres, I believe that this property would have had
10 acres of water on it - such as a lake or a river.
Hope this is your John Carter.
Alan McCullough
