...Besides those already mentioned, the settlers who came early in the year
1817 were John Bartholomew,Thomas McNaught, John Mitchell, John Hudson, Hugh
Barnes, Isaiah Cooper, William McDonald, Jacob McIntrye, JAMES BIGGER, Dudley
Milner, Richard Kirby and William Anderson. These were all who arrived in
time to make a crop in 1817.
...The first marriages were those of JAMES BIGGER and Thomas Allen, who
married Daughters of Philip Hart on the same day, having obtained licenses at
Vincennes, before Owen County was organized.
...[Occurred after March 1820]....James Galletly, surveyor, proceeded to lay
out the town [Spencer, IN], which he did into 272 lots. He was assisted by
Samuel Alexander, JAMES BIGGER, Samuel Fain, John Dunn, Thomas Allen, Arthur
(son of David) Johnson, Enoch Beem, Andrew Evans, Levi Beem, John R. Freel
and George Hambleton. .....
