Anne,
You are certainly right about Childress being Childers on early records. I
have found that quite a bit. Even as late as the 1920 census, Childress was
misspelled. I didn't know about the Arney name, and it might lead to
something!
I just recently found a site that is about the Moravian Church, which is where
the Fulk/Volk line has been traced from. MANY of the names from Franklin Twp.
appear to be from families of this church, and seemed to migrate over, just as
you said. Most all of the names, at least before they were Americanized, were
very German. If anyone is interested, this site is
http://www.fmoran.com/index.html
It's amazing how many familiar names show up when searching through links from
this site!
Bruce,
I will certainly let you know what I figure out on this! Most of the
Childress names you mention are children of this Elisha and Suzanne ? that I'm
looking for! Seems like that is about as far back as most have been able to
prove, but maybe someone's out there! I have 11 children listed for Elisha
and Suzanne, but some of the earlier ones I am not certain of (Louisa for
one!) Some were married and out of the house by the 1850 census, so I haven't
been able to verify what I think I know-yet! My husband's aunt descends from
Elisha's son Alexander, and I've been fooling around with what I can find on
the internet! I haven't found anything at the library that can go back any
further, at least without some kind of verification!
Thanks all!
Jacquie
