Here is a problem I am hoping that someone can solve.
Robert McCULLOUGH b. 1784-1789 married Polly Modrell
Based on the 1840 Owen County census they were the parents of nine children:
Mary R. b. 1810-1820 married John Varvil/Varnil
Unknown Female b. 1810-1820
Elizabeth b. 1810-1820
Hannah b. 1812 married John Cain
Adam b. 1818 married Mary Evans
Nancy b. 1820-1825 (this is not the one listed in the home of William McCullough her
uncle)
Sarah b. 1820-1825 (again not the one listed in the home of William McCullough her
uncle)
Margaret b. 1821 married Christopher Cain
William J. b. 1829 married Elizabeth Cain.
NOW----
The family resided in the Montgomery township area. Although the parents were shown in the
1840 census, they are not in the 1850. However, since they were in the 60-70 year age
group they could well have died sometime in there.
On March 21, 1845 Robert sold 60 acres in Section 35 to William Guinn; so I am assuming
him to be alive at that time.
On March 4, 1853 A warranty deed for the remaining portions of Robert's land is
created between William Guinn and Robert's children; listing them all as well as their
spouses as heirs of Robert McCullough. Thus assuming that Robert has by this time died.
WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE UNKNOWN FEMALE ABOVE, ALL CHILDREN ARE LISTED.
The married children w/spouses are found in various areas of Owen County in the 1850
census.
Adam and wife, Mary are in Jennings twp
William and wife, Elizabeth are in Montgomery twp
Hannah and husband, John are in Montgomery twp
Margaret and husband, Christopher are in Wayne twp
Mary and husband, John are in Wayne twp
The unmarried women in the warranty deed (Nancy, Sarah, and Elizabeth) are NOT found in
any of their homes. They were as stated unmarried as of 1853, therefore listed by their
maiden names so apparently never married but presumably alive for the 1850 census.
My question is:
Where were these women residing in the 1850 census?
I was thinking that the parents died and the girls were living with siblings, but that
isn't the case.
At the time of the warranty deed all signers are said to be "of Owen County"- so
that eliminates them returning from somewhere else to sign the papers.
Can anyone help with this?
Thank you for any assistance
