Subject: Re: [INOWEN] Anyone out there?
Dear Fellow Listmembers,
Having descended from Owen County's McCartys, Goodwins, Combs, Martins and
others I have a strong attachment and interest in local history. I am a
paleontologist at the University of Florida's Museum of Natural History and
I'm researching personal accounts of the 1811 New Madrid Earthquake, whose
epicenter was near New Madrid, Missouri, a small village on the Mississippi
River. The magnitude of this earthquake was of sufficient intensity that
it must have been felt in Owen County as well as the rest of southern
Indiana and Kentucky. Of course, I have copies of the Crist family
diaries. This early Owen County family had moved to Owen County from
Kentucky in an attempt to distance themselves from the earthquake's
aftershocks and any future major quakes. The diaries entries describe,
first hand, that family's awesome, and traumatic experiences with the
earthquake and the following aftershocks.
Such catastrophic events, though rare, are sometimes prime movers in the
migration and movement of families from one area to another, and certainly
provided a valid reason for many families coming to Owen County.
Considering, it's terrifying and widespread impact, there must surely be
any other personal accounts recorded or handed down by other families as
well. I would certainly appreciate corresponding with anyone who has
information on first person accounts of this significant event.
Sincerely,
Russell McCarty

The weather in Indiana is turning cold and I like all the other little
squirrels am gathering my nuts (or vice versa) for winter supply and
researching, so....
Lets get some queries on the list for us to work on this winter, unless of
course I am the only one who doesn't know where I came from --
I know who most everyone is researching, but there are new subscribers and
maybe someone has some answers out there.
For the new subscribers, just make a posting to the list with the following:
Who or what family you are researching?
When they were born/died or in Owen county
any other pertinent info such as parents, children, locations, whatever to
help others help you.
Please place the SURNAME in the subject line and don't just hit the reply
button. Make a new posting to the list.
Good Luck everyone!!
