Thanks very much for making the memoirs available to us. My gggrandparents,
Troy Phipps and Jane Long made the trip from Owen County to Webster Co., Iowa in
1864. It must have been a similar trek for them. The following was written by
their son Washington Phipps and published in the Dayton Review on November 23,
1893
"Yell - Obit. of Mrs Jane Phipps by Wash Phipps: Death has again entered the
home of my parents, this time the mother, leaving nine children. She was born
15 nov. 1817 in Ashe Co., NC and died her Nov. 15, 1893. She was born in the
mountains of western North Carolina. She was married in 1832 at age 20 to Troy
Phipps, he was age 18. About 1835 they decided to leave and go to the new state
of Ind. They had one horse, on which mother and oldest sister, Arrena (then an
infant) rode, while my father and his brother Wilburn, walked proudly by her
side. Arriving at Owen Co., Ind. they built a log cabin on 40 acres he
purchased from the government. In 1864 he sold the farm and moved to Webster
co., IA where he bot a farm 8 miles NE of Dayton. They lived there until death.
Ten children were born, 8 girls and 2 boys. One daughter, Louisa died on 8
March 1864, age 19 in Owen Co., Indiana where she was born. Father died on 17
Aug 1880. Mrs Phipps was buried in the Lehigh cem. (Mr Phipps was a member of
the Baptist church)."
Might we be cousins? Jane Long had a cousin Franklin Long born in 1841.
Again thanks!
