Local Artist, Mr. Ken Bucklew to speak
at March 21st OCHGS Meeting
Ken Bucklew was born in Greencastle, Indiana in 1957 and he grew up on the
edge of Spencer in Owen County, Indiana. He was drawing and painting at an
early age, but did not realize his potential until his elementary art school
teacher, Ina Hight, took him under her wing. High School brought awards and
his first commissions as a painter. Ken planned to enroll at Ivy Tech for
the 1975 fall semester, but in July of that summer tragedy struck.
While vacationing in Minnesota, he sustained a severe spinal cord injury in
a diving accident that resulted in total paralysis from the neck down. Many
months of therapy and rehab were required to just get him back on his feet.
The injury has caused Ken physical limitations, which include a lack of
sensation, strength and dexterity in his fingers and hands. He is forced to
rely on his upper arm and shoulder movement to paint.
After doing some work commercially, Ken completed some paintings of favorite
wild and unspoiled locations in his native Owen County. His waterfowl and
game bird paintings have been published extensively by the Indiana
Department of Natural Resources and Indiana Ducks Unlimited. His artwork has
raised many thousands of dollars for Ducks Unlimited's wetlands and
restoration efforts. He is the all time winner in the IDNR's nationwide
Indiana Duck Stamp, Game Bird Habitat Stamp, and Hoosier Outdoor Calendar
artwork competitions.
Ken's paintings are on display at the Honeysuckle Gallery in Nashville,
Indiana, and at his personal gallery located directly across from the
entrance to McCormick's Creek State Park.
Everyone is invited to come to the Owen County Public Library's meeting room
on the upper level and listen to one of Owen County's own tell us about his
methods of conveying his love of Owen County's natural beauty through his
paintings.
