Does anyone know what happened to the child Nancy J. Criss (daughter of
Henry Criss and Juliett Roberts)gave birth to in early 1870? According to
an 1870 letter published in the Owen Co. Genealogy magazine, she had married
James G. Mustard (Nov. 7, 1869) but a baby arrived much too early to be his,
and he divorced her. The baby was probably born in January 1870, as the
letter writer says the baby arrived "the first week" which sounds like he
means the first week of 1870.
She then married John Franklin Carter in Owen Co. on June 27, 1870, too late
for the 1870 census date of June 1. I don't know where she was living in
1870 in terms of that census, nor what surname her child carried, and if it
lived. Another researcher thinks Nancy died around 1875 in a flood. In
1870 James Mustard was living with his family, apparently already divorced.
Where were Nancy and her child on June 1, 1870?
