Professor James H. Madison to Speak on
"The Ordinary People of World War II"
at February 21st OCHGS Meeting
Do you have questions about the lives your parents and relatives lived
during World War II? How were their daily lives changed after the war
started? World War II changed everything and engaged everyone. Young men
who had never left their home county went off in uniform. Women worked in
factories and offices and made essential contributions to the war economy.
Black Americans sought new opportunities to work and live in a nation that
had long offered segregation and discrimination. War-time fears challenged
America's dedication to law and justice for all, as evidenced in the
internment of Japanese Americans. Hoosiers, like all Americans, struggled
with these and other issues in small towns and big cities as they joined to
bring an Allied victory over the Axis powers.
James Madison has accepted an invitation to speak about "The Ordinary People
of World War II" on February 21st at 7:00 PM at the Owen Valley High School
Library located at 622 W. State Hwy 46 in Spencer, IN. Professor Madison
is the Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor of History and former chair of
the Department of History, Indiana University, Bloomington. Among his
publications are The Indiana Way: A State History, Eli Lilly: A Life, and A
Lynching in the Heartland: Race and Memory in America.
At Indiana University Bloomington, Professor Madison teaches United States
history, a course in Indiana history, and two courses on World War II. In
1994, the University awarded Professor Madison its Sylvia E. Bowmen
Distinguished Teaching Award. He has also taught, as a Fulbright Professor,
at Hiroshima University, Japan, and at the University of Kent, Canterbury,
England. In 2001 the Organization of American Historians named Professor
Madison a Distinguished Lecturer. He is the recipient also of the Indiana
Historical Society's Hoosier Historian Award and has been a fellow at
Harvard University, the Newberry Library, and the Huntington Library. In
2001 the Organization of American Historians named Professor Madison a
Distinguished Lecturer.
Join us in the Owen Valley High School Library and become familiar with how
we Hoosiers dealt with World War II.
In March, we will resume meeting at the Owen County Public Library located
at 10 S. Montgomery St. Spencer, Indiana where the program will be a
presentation by local Owen County artist, Ken Bucklew.
As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
