In answer to the person who asked for the location of the Wabash Valley
Obituary Index:
The Wabash Valley Obituary Index is on the webpage of the Vigo County Public
Library.
www.vigo.lib.in.us
Once your have the page loaded, look at the choices down on the left side of
your screen, and you will see the index.
(
http://www.vigo.lib.in.us/~obits/index.htm) It is divided into two
chronological groups. CAVEAT: remember that the date show for each obit
is usually the first date that the obit appeared in the newspaper. It is
not necessarily the same as the date of death. In years past, Terre Haute
had a morning newspaper, The Star, and an evening newspaper, The Tribune.
Generally, the library has chosen to index the entries from the Tribune,
although there are some exceptions. An entry could have run more than
once, but only the first instance is indexed. If a major story was
connected that includes the obit info, that is the choice indexed. For
example, a "cousin" of mine was killed in a taxi crash in the early forties,
and the story was a front page item, with survivors listed at the end of the
story. That was the story that was indexed by the obituary index.
Hope this helps.
