I have tried to track anyone named Criss in Owen County because they are all
related somewhere along the line as far as I can tell. I have that Eliza
Jane Criss was born in Illinois to John
W. Criss and Maria Hutson in May 1872- so if you know it was May 1873
it may be correct. The 1900 census lists her as born May 1872, not 1873,
but then the census is not always correct either.
The Hubers are living in Douglas Co, IL, Murdock Twp, in 1900.
Eliza Jane Criss' mother is also known as Linda Marie or Mariah in various
records.
In the 1910 census, Eliza Jane Criss Huber is listed as "Lida".
John W. Criss and Mariah Hutson are listed as being married May 17, 1866,
book 29, p. 278 on the Owen County website nicknamed "Sweet Owen"
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inowen2/sweetowen.html
I believe that John W. Criss was born July 25, 1848 as I have a separate
birthdate for him that I have written "yes" by, although I previously had a
range of dates, so apparently at some point I was convinced it is correct.
I finally found him enumerated twice in one year in the 1900 census for
North Dakota, and each entry seems to suggest he was born in July 1848.
Every time I find him his numbers have been scribbled over! John was the
son of James (Wm ???) Criss and Rachel Jane Williams - married July 1, 1847.
James Wm (?) Criss died April 8, 1862 in Memphis TN. This James was the
brother of my great-grandfather, John C. Criss, who was also a Civil War
soldier, although John C. Criss was very young when he went in. James Criss
was born Oct. 28, 1825 in Carrol County Ohio to Nancy France Criss and
William Criss. There is a marriage for Rachel Jane Criss to Joseph
Snodgrass, Owen Co., IN Oct. 29, 1863 book 29 p. 39. Whether this is the
widow Criss or a different Rachel I do not know - and I don't know the ages
of either of the parties. Where they were in 1870 might help solve it.
Another researcher may have sent me this info at some point - it seems
vaguely familiar - but I am overwhelmed by paper and cannot put my hands on
it if I indeed have any Civil War info on him and what became of his widow.
Another Criss, Henry Criss who was born about 1832/1833 in Ohio or in 1838
in Indiana (different findings, different genealogists) and married Nancy A
or Nancy B depending on what record you see or genealogist you talk to. One
child was John W. Criss, born about 1855 or 1856. So that's another John W.
Criss. The Henry Criss I have more info on was married to Juliett and was a
brother to my great-grandfather. So I can't figure out this Henry and his
son John W. Criss.
John W. Criss (son of James and Rachel) and his wife Maria, Mariah, Linda
Marie moved to Illinois, Edgar county, and are found there in 1870 M593,
Roll 218, p. 44, Lines 1-4, "town of Edgar", post office Bloomfield.
At that time they had James (H?), age 3 and William T, age 10/12, so
obviously born in 1869. Eliza Jane Criss had not yet been born. I have a
note that in Oct. 1874 James H (?). was age 7, William T. was age 5 and
Eliza was age 2.
A divorce petition was filed and granted in Oct. 1874 in Owen County
Indiana. According to the Owen County website, Mariah Criss married Charles
W. Creed on January 10, 1875, book 30, p. 426. In 1880 Charles W. Creed and
Mariah Creed are living in Morgan Twp, Owen County Indiana, T9, roll 302, p.
254A according to the LDS site. Living with them is Liza Jane Creed, age 8,
born Illinois (who is really Liza Jane Criss), Lillie May Creed, age 1, born
Indiana, and Elz Creed, age 10, "other", born Indiana. I can't find John W.
Criss in the 1880 census, nor 2nd wife Julia, nor son Robert who was born
prior to 1880. Son Nelson was born after 1880. John W. Criss remarried to
Julia A. UNKNOWN and in 1900 they are living in Benson County North Dakota
with 2 sons, Robert H, born Nov. 1876 (scribbled over) and Nelson A. R. born
Nov. 1881. T623, Roll 1226, p. 178 June 13, 1900. He was enumerated twice,
and is listed with Nelson again, no wife, but says he has been married 25
years, in Benson County ND, Fairview School, Township 152 Range 70 June 6,
1900 T623, roll 1226, p. 188.
I've probably made things more confusing. Just have to go by my notes and
help you, maybe you can puzzle it all out!
