I first joined this list over a year ago because I found a William Schuler
and Elizabeth (NICE)Schuler in the 1860 Census for Owen Co., IN who I thought
might be the parents of Lovina Schuler, my great, great grandmother. A year
later and after several days of research at the Family History Library in Salt
Lake City last winter, I can now prove they are her parents.
I plan to mail my family group sheets to the Owen Co. Hist. & Gen. Society,
but in the meantime, I thought I should mention the other Surnames I have found
in case someone else on this list is researching those families.
My great grandmother Lovina Schuler was born in Lancaster, PA in 1825 (per
her obituary even though I have still found no record of her family there), was
married in 1849 in Plain Township, Wayne Co., OH. She then moved to Decatur,
Van Buren Co., MI and her parents and most of her siblings moved to Jefferson,
Owen Co., Indiana by the 1850 census.
William & Elizabeth Schuler had 9 children I can account for on census. I am
including the names of spouses, where I have found them:
Joel Schuler b. 1824 in PA m. (1) Mary E. WINTERS (2) Mary BARTHOLOMEW
Lovina Schuler b. 1825 m. Jacob S. PRIEST (they never lived in Owen Co., IN)
Matilda b. 1828 m. Samuel BRIGHTEN
Priscella b. 1832 m. Woodford HERROD and they moved to Kansas
William Schuler b. 1833 m. (1) Cassian FIELDS and (2) Lucinda LITTLE JOHN.
They ended up living in Greene Co., Indiana.
Samuel Schuler b. 1840 (I have found no other information about him)
Susannah b. 1842 (I have found no other information about her)
Sarah Schuler b. 1844 m. Manoah GRIM (I believe they moved to Indianapolis)
Mary A. Schuler b. 1846 m. John WHITE (I think he died in 1901)
I also have some information about the subsequent generation:
Joel Schuler had 4 children:
John H. Schuler b. 1854 (I haven't found any more info on him)
Hannah A. b. 1856 (I think she was called Elizabeth in the 1870 census and
Belle in some
later census when she lived with her brother
Abraham)
(I believe Hannah & Obadiah were named after
their grandparents
Hannah & Obadiah WINTERS buried in the Winters
cemetery)
I think she married someone named CUTLER and was
widowed early
She had a son Fred CUTLER 1900 census
Abraham C. b. 1858 (he never married) Belle/Hannah was his housekeeper
Obadiah W. b. 1860. m. (1) Hila COLLENBAUGH. He was the postmaster in
Daggett.
William Schuler, Jr. b. 1834 had a daughter Ora A. who married Edward PALMER
I would love to hear from anyone researching these other surnames. Let me
know if you see something that is not correct.
I don't know what happened to William and Elizabeth (NICE) Schuler from
Lancaster, PA. I last find them in the 1860 census in Owen Co., IN. I have not
found them buried in the Owen Co. cemeteries near any of their children who
settled there.
I find a couple whose ages fit in Stephenson Co., IL in the 1870 census, but
unless I find other family nearby, I won't be able to prove it is them.
However, William Schuler was a farmer, and the one in Illinois was a cooper.
