Panel of Freedom, Indiana Residents
July 17, 2007
“Our Reminisces of Freedom, Indiana”
The town of Freedom in Franklin Township, Owen County, was platted in about 1834. In
the early days, Freedom was a bustling community which boasted of having two blacksmiths,
four carpenters, one cabinet maker, one clergyman, three stores, two physicians, two steam
sawmills, one tanning yard and two hotels.
The Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society’s program for July 17th will present
a Freedom Panel made up of several residents whose families were among some of the
earliest settlers. They will discuss their town and some of the great stories about the
businesses, the people and the events of the “good old days”.
We hope a lot of people will come and join us as we listen, learn and participate in
sharing our memories about the lives of the early residents of Freedom. Come and hear
about the merry-go-round (or liar’s bench as some call it). They might even talk about
the boys who drilled through the floor into a keg of “spirits”. Have you heard the story
about the “watering hole” that was blown up by dynamite?
You won’t want to miss the lively conversation at the July 17th meeting. Bring your own
stories, pictures and memories to share. Everyone can participate and tell stories about
their own families and about local histories that make this ourSweet Owen County! Come
and talk “over the backyard fence”!
Everyone is invited to come to the Owen County Public Library’s meeting room on the
upper level and join the Freedom panel on July 17th at 7:00 pm, 10 S. Montgomery Street,
Spencer, Indiana.
