Dear Travis:
I have Criss's in my line and find them a bit of a brick wall. I have a Mary
Criss married to John Jacob Long. She was born about 1802 in PA, he on Dec.
29, 1801 in Ohio. In the 1850 Owen County Census, they have a Sarah Criss,
aged 73, born in VI, living in the household. This is her mother?
1850 Indiana Census, Owen County, Lafayette Township
Series M432, #164, page 152:
Jacob Long, 49 years old, farmer, $1000 property, born in Ohio
1 person in household married within year, 4 attended school.
Wife is MARY, 48, born in Pennsylvania
John, 20, farmer, born in Ohio
Mary J., 17, born in Ohio
George, 15, born in Ohio
Elizabeth, 12, born in Ohio
Jacob H., 10, born in Ohio
and Sarah Criss, 73, born in Virginia
Other researchers have told me that this is Sarah Tolen, born Oct. 1, 1778
in Brooke County, Virginia, Died July 16, 1854 in Vandalia, Owen County,
Indiana. She was apparently married to John Michael Criss, Jr., born March
30, 1774 in Brooke County, Virginia, Died Sept. 17, 1845 in Carroll County,
OH. I do have documentation to prove this connection. Sarah Tolen is
apparently the daughter of John Tolen and Esther Dwire, but I know nothing
of this, no documentation, dates, other children, etc. Same for John Michael
Criss, Jr. apparently the son of John Michael Crist, Sr. and Ursula Hawkins.
Anything you know about this line would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Alison Scott
