I would very much appreciate it if someone with access to 1830 and 1840 census returns for Owen County could give me the full data for John Hudson and, if they appear heading their own households his two sons.
John Hudson (b. about 1788) and his sons
William Hudson (b. Sept 14, 1811)
Thomas Hudson (b. about 1816)
The names may also be recorded as Hutson. It possible, it would be terrific to know the adjacent names of neighbors for John and his two sons.
Many thanks in advance for whatever assistance you can offer.

It would be interesting to know how many families in Owen County history had children named for Lorenzo Dow. My husband's ancestors include Lorenzo Dow Light. I wonder whether we have any record of Lorenzo Dow preaching in Owen Co. IN.
The Scott family also includes Marquis DeLafayette Scott and his brother Jerome Bonaparte Scott. Earlier generations had Thomas Jefferson Scott. Later generation, John Wesley Scott. We have some Winfield Scotts, not related to the famous military man of that name.
When the Protestants gave up the Roman Catholic practice of naming their children for the saints, they went to hunt and poke for Biblical names, which shows up often in New England. By the time the folks had moved west to Indiana, they had given up the names of my ancestors, such as Prudence, Patience, Deliverance (both male & female), and had gone to using names of contemporary important people. The father of M. DeLafe and Jerome B. Scott was named John T. M. Scott. What could the T. M. stand for? That family also named a daughter, who only lived to three years of age, Ringgold Scott. We wonder who that name stands for. We find cities and counties occasionally namedRinggold - some connection with Das Rheingold? Anyone want to guess?

I read something about this person a long time ago when I ran into several people having named their children that name......seems alot of people did it because of this:
Lorenzo Dow (October 16, 1777 – February 2, 1834) was an eccentric itinerant American preacher. He was an important figure in the Second Great Awakening. He was also a successful writer. His autobiography at one time was the second best-selling book in the United States, exceeded only by the Bible.
Seems people tended to name their children after important people of their times.

John,
That last one I sent I guess wasn't him......as I looked under Hutson as you had said and it pulled up 1820,30 & 40 in Owen Co. so I'm sending the 1830 and 1840 as you had requested. As you can see one was listed as Hutson and the other as Hutton.

Thank you. I had that happen to my gg grandfather who was named for Francis Asbury. Was so excited when I would come accross this name in other families just to be disapointed when I found out he was named for a preacher also. Oh darn. Thank you.

Thank you. I have no information about James Gillespie's ancestry at this
time. I just wondered if your family lived around the Clay/Owen County area?

Yes, but only a few of them. My husband was born and raised in Harmony,
Clay Co., IN. His father was Thomas Gardner b in 1875 in Scotland. His father
was also a Thomas Gardiner who was married to Mary Jane Parker, also of Van
Buren Twp., Clay County. Grandfather Thomas came to the US in 1869. He
married Mary Jane, daughter of Ord Parker and Margaret Drummond, in Clay
County. He took her back to Motherwell, where his Mother was living at the time,
shortly after the marriage. After Thomas 1875 was born they returned to an
area called Frogtown in Van Buren Twp. Thomas, Dora, Nettie and Robert
Gardner all stayed in Clay County. William went to Bay City, MI after his
divorce over in Illinois. Except for Betty Lou Gardner and her two children,
there are no more Gardner's around Clay Co., IN.
Grandfather Thomas had one sister who came to Indiana around 1884. She,
Ellen Gardner, married Robert Rankin. They lived up around Diamond.
If I can be of any further help, just email me.

Donna Mason,
Does your Gillespi family have any connection to folks who live in Texas
with the name Gillespie? I am the administrator for the ORMAN/AUMAN Family
DNA group. We have a new member named Gillespie whose Mother was an Orman,
and resided in Arkansas. She was descended from William Orman and Patia
Mishler (William was a son of Andrew Orman and Nancy Comer.) He says he is
Jewish. His DNA matches Kent Orman of Ottumwa, Iowa. Kent's gr grandfather was
Elijah Orman who was born in NC in 1819. Elijah was claimed as a son of
David Orman b 1800. However, the DNA indicates he had another father! We are
trying to find how Gillespie and Kent Orman's DNA would match????

Dear Mary,
I somehow don't think my Gillespy is related to yours, but truth be
told, I don't know much about her. She was my grdfather's mother and
died, at 23, in childbirth. I know that her brother or uncle was in
the Revolutionary War and maybe the family, much earlier originated in
Scotland or Ireland. So, sorry I can't be of more help.
Good luck!

Owen County Will Abstracts 1819-1861 compiled by Charles M. Franklin shows
two Smith wills:
1) Samuel Smith (wife Mary) - Recorded Feb 16, 1849
2) John C. Smydth (wife Margaret) - Recorded May 13, 1852
And I agree with the earlier poster that the Owen County Library
Genealogical section is a great resource. I've used it successfully. I was
aslo able to find a death record on an ancestor at the Owen County Health
Department but that was for an 1888 death.

Coleen and others: Have you also checked CLAY COUNTY records? Due to the boundary lines of counties changing between 1820-1850 sometimes the info is not in the county you are looking in. One of my lines, homed in Owen, children's birth records were found at Clay County Library. Just food for thought to pursue...

My prayers are with you and your daughter & family. God bless.
