Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Will those of you NOT posting regarding your surnames for listing - PLEASE,
PLEASE change your subject line to reflect your posting content?
The suname listings should be sent to me personally anyway, HOWEVER, I am
looking at the postings and seeing MANY entitled "Updating Website" and the
content has nothing to do with that but is conversation between two people.
Please take the few seconds to change your subject line or take your
postings private.
You are all adults and have been on the list for a long time and know how
things go. This is the second request I have made regarding this.

I too am looking for Indiana PHIPPS. Mine was in MARTIN, DAVIES and
LAWRENCE COs. 1830 my BERRY PHIPPS came to IN. LEWIS PHIPPS a relative? was already
in Lawrence Co. IN. I know Owens CO IN had PHIPPS too. My THOMAS C. PHIPPS
is my line b. 1817 in KY. PULASKI CO. I have seen data on a JESSE PHIPPS but
dont know if it was one born 1788 and father was JAMES? What do you know.
Mine was born 1790 in N.C. (BERRY) PHIPPS and died 1862 in Lawrence CO IN.

I am brand new to this list, and fairly new to genealogy.
I am working on my husband's family from Owen County. Joe White (b 1958) was
born in Spencer and attended grade school there.
Searching for any family of Vernal White (B. 1890), or his father Edward A.
White (b. 1876).
Hoping to fill out my info on Lucille Edna Ooley (B 1898). I have birth,
parents, marriage and burial.
Arminda Zay Uland (b. 1909, buried at Riverside Cemetery as Zay Uland
Johnson) - hunting for an obituary or news article on death in June 1960.
Also, I suspect she had siblings; Kenney, who appears on the 1920 Census -
then disappears and Erma/Emma - who never appears on the Census, but some
online "family lines" list as a sister.
Carl Johnson (1902) - I hope to find where he's buried - he died before
1959, that's the only info I've found on his death. Other than his name and
that he was tall and slim, I have no info on him. Parents were Sallie A.
Neal and Edward Johnson (adopted). Siblings were Ruby Mildred (Parrish) - I
have her obituary if anyone needs a copy, and still alive in 1959: Arthur
Johnson, Eileen (Baker) and Dorothy (Waskom).
Laura Hubble - I have one resource listing her as the mother of Vernal
White. I would like to verify this, find out if she married Edward A. White,
what happened to her. I've found info on a Laura Hubble who went to Kansas,
not sure if that's her. Why did she leave her son in Owen county?
Please forgive any delay in responding to emails. I am living and working at
a Girl Scout Camp this summer, as their Camp Nurse. We don't have internet
at camp. I have to drive into town and visit the library to read/answer
emails.

Larry,
I am not familiar with the book _Owen County Cousins_. I am searching for
information on the families of: Warren T. Moore (1844-1876) who married in
1865 to Frances E. Norris (1847-1889) and had 5 children: Ida, Charles, John,
Maggie and Minnie. After the death of Warren, Frances married in 1878 to
John Ezra Scott (1850-after 1889), and they had children: Jennie, Ezra and
Albert.
Do any of these people show up in the book? Thank you!
Charlotte

Listmembers:
Although I didn't think this necessary at first, based on numerous private
emails I have received, apparently it is.
My goal in the previous email regarding Surname Listings was to update
information regarding your surnames listed, your name and your emails. I
also wanted to give new members an opportunity to add their information. I
am redoing the pages and wanted to get every correct at the same time.
As many pointed out to me, we have had little if any activity on the list
for the last few months and after my posting- everyone posted everything
using the subject line of simply "Surname Listings"- also only listings the
surnames, but asking for information.
THIS WAS NOT MY INTENT.
The activity on the list was GREAT, however, just not done in the correct
manner.
If you wish to make a posting, please do it but make your subject line
REFLECT YOUR QUERY.
Also take the time to include your pertinent information (full names, dates,
locations) to allow someone to assist you.
Regarding the Surname Listings, "I" only need the SURNAMES
TO SEND ME YOUR SURNAME LISTINGS-
Use the subject line of SURNAME LISTINGS or WEBSITE UPDATING (so I may sort
these out)
Send them to debjennings(a)dtccom.net
TO MAKE A QUERY POSTING TO THE LIST (regarding something else)
1. Adjust the subject line to include surname, time frame, locations
(for better response)
2. Send it to INOWEN-L(a)rootsweb.com
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SENT IN YOUR SURNAMES TO THE LIST-
You DO NOT need to resend them to me, however if you have
adjustments/corrections/additions please send them to ME and I will make the
adjustments.
I don't mean to be a pain, but I want to keep the list for its intended
purpose and to allow persons posting to it to gain the most from their
queries.
To post a message that says:
"I got JOHNSON's in that area, anyone got any information on them" doesn't
help you at all and it frustrates everyone else. To send that to me
personally, I know you are just adding your surname to the listings.
I hope this takes care of the problem to everyone's satisfaction.

Kim - do you research farther afield in Weatherly family? I'm
interested in the Jesse Weatherly who married Harriet Bowen. Here is
the information I have on that family. If you know anything about
this couple, I'm interested in corrections or more.
Judy
Name: Jesse WEATHERLY
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth: 1821 NC
Death: Mar 1870? Greene Co., IN?
Mother: Nancy GOFF
Other spouses: Martha PHILLIPS
Misc. Notes
Jesse Weatherly is enumerated in the 1850 census as living next door
to John Bowen Sr., his father-in-law. He is a farmer whose worth is
$300. He is NC born. Jesse lives in Franklin TWP of Owen Co., IN with
his wife Harriet [Bowen] age 30 and 3 children: George - age 4, IN
born; Alexander - age 2, IN born; and Caroline - age 1, IN born.
Jesse is enumerated under the spelling Wetherley in the 1860 census
of Owen Co., IN. He is described as 40 years old, NC born. He has a
Freedom, IN P.O. His six children live with him, but no wife. This is
consistent with the theory that his wife died about 1857 or slightly
thereafter, that he remarried Martha Phillips in 1858, and they both
sued for divorce in May of 1859. By 1860, he is living alone. There
is an entry in the Greene Co., IN “Oaths,& Letters, Book 1” From Oct
1855-Mar 1870 involving Jesse. Perhaps he died by then.
The marriage to Martha ended in May of 1859.
Owen County land records show that Jesse Weatherly purchased land in
Owen Co., IN:
1854 1) SE SW - 58 T9, R4 - 80 acres
2) NW SW - 58 T9 R4, 80 acres
6 Aug 1847 SW SW T9 840 acres
10 Dec 1852 SE SW 1.40 T9 R5
5 Nov 1847 NE NW 5 40
8 Nov 1849 SE NW 13 40
Marriage: 15 Feb 1844 Owen Co, IN
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Spouse: Harriet __BOWEN
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth: ca 1820 OH
Death: ca 1857 Age: 37
Father: John BOWEN Sr. (1789-1852)
Mother: Eleanor SCOTT (ca1790-1840)
Other spouses: William W. HAUSER
Misc. Notes
Parentage
In the probate materials submitted to the courts in Owen
County, IN in relation to the death of John Bowen Sr., Harriet Bowen
and Jesse Weatherly are listed as an heir to John Bowen Sr.
Marriages
Owen County, IN marriage records document a marriage between
Harriet Bowen and William Hauser in 1841 and then a marriage between
Harriet Hauser and Jesse Weatherly in 1844. So far I have found
little information on William Hauser. Given that I have found no
divorce records for the couple, I am speculating that he died prior
to 1844. By John Bowen Sr’s death in 1852, Jesse Weatherly and
Harriet are a couple.
Census Data
Harriet is enumerated in the 1830 and 1840 census listings for
Owen Co., IN, but she is not named in these documents. Alhtough her
birth date is about 1820, she seems not to be enumerated in the 1820
census in OH. The family lived there until about 1822 so her birth is
probably fixed in that time period as she later describes herself as
OH born.
In the 1830 census of Owen Co., IN, Harriet lives with her
family in Owen Co., IN in a John Boin (Bowen in Index) household with
the her parents both between 30 and 40 years old, a boy and a girl
less than five years old, 2 girls 5-10, 4 girls 10-15, and a boy and
a girl 15-20. Harriet would be one of the girls age 10-15.
In the 1840 census of Owen County, IN, Harriet is still living
with her family. Her parents are between the ages of 40 and 50.
Several children have already married and moved out to start their
own families, but there are still a boy and a girl 10-15, and 1
female 15-20, and 1 female 20 - 30 which we think is Harriet,
probably about 20 years old..
In the 1850 Census of Owen County, IN, the married Harriet is
enumerated and named living with her second husband, Jesse Weatherly
living next door to her father, John Bowen Sr. Her mother is missing,
we speculate deceased, by the 1850 census. Harriet is shown as age
30. and OH born. She lives with her husband Jessee Weatherly, age 29
and NC born; and her 3 children: George - age 4, IN born; Alexander -
age 2, IN born; and Caroline - age 1, IN born. The family is
enumerated in Franklin TWP of Owen Co.
It is from this 1850 census that we calculated her birthdate
as ca1820.
Although Harriet is listed in the 1850 census, she is absent
from the family by the 1860 census. We are speculating that she died.
Since there is a child of hers in the 1860 census listed as being age
3, we are speculating that she died between 1857 and 1860.
Furthermore, since Jesse remarried to Martha Phillips in Sept of
1858, I’m also guessing that she died in late 1857, early 1858.

Thank you for your reply. I need to get back into my few files on Aunt
Dorothy and her Dad's family to see just who Silvia's father was. The disease is
passed from Mother to Son, Daughter to son's etc. The opposite is true for the
carriers. It is a nasty disease that causes so much pain.
Dot's Dad had the disease. Dot passed it to son David who died of a heart
attack caused by MD. He was also going blind, another complication of MD. Her
Dad's mother was Silvia, who suffered from it also. I just like to bring up
the subject with descendents of that old Asher family not to cause trouble but
to warn it might be in your past too. Not all members inherit or pass it on.

At one time or another just about everyone has come across a vintage postcard or two stashed away among the family treasures. In fact, you may have wondered "Is this worth anything?" Well, the Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society is offering an opportunity for you to visit with a collector of such items. Harley Sheets, an officer of the Indianapolis Postcard Club, will be the guest speaker at the June 19th OCHGS meeting.
Harley will talk about his personal collection of old postcards and will be displaying many items from his large collection. Your assignment, if you plan to come and see Harley, is to dig into those dark corners of your own attic and bring your postcards and paper memorabilia to the meeting. Perhaps we all will finally discover the background and history of our own collections. Maybe there is an unidentified national treasure hidden away in that old cigar box that belonged to grandpa. Harley will be glad to offer his opinion on the value of your postcards and you might even find that you'll want to frame and display your rare find.
Everyone is invited to come to the Owen County Public Library's meeting room on the upper level and listen to Harley Sheets speak about the popular pastime of collecting postcards. Bring your questions and, by all means, bring your own postcard collection. Join us on June 19th at 7:00 pm, 10 S. Montgomery Street, Spencer, Indiana.
Best Regards,

Subject: [INOWEN] Forgive me for asking.
Over the last few days a ton of people have posted several tons of surnames with no details. I'm having a tough time understanding why people would not give a few details. Owen County has had thousands, no, probably millions, of people pass through it over the last two hundred or so years. I'm sure there have been many families with the surname Johnson or Jones among them. The same is undoubted true for lesser common names like Williams, Morgan, Harrison and Richards.
What is accomplished by listing only surnames with no other information?
Just asking.
