Terresa,
I don't know about this person, but if he lived with your family or near
your family as early as 1930, he could show up in the 1930 census which
would give you a first and last name. I have access to the census and would
be happy to do a look up if that would help.

Subject: [INOWEN] Owen or Greene Co: Looking Cook or Clarence with
nickname"Cockrobin"
I have a mystery and hope you all might be able to help.
I grew up hearing the name "Cockrobin" who worked on the farm for my dad.
The farm was on White River near Farmer's Ferry on the border of Owen and
Greene Counties. I have several pictures of him that I think his family
would perhaps enjoy seeing.
One of the pictures has "Cockrobin" dated 1938 as he was "entering the
Navy".
Another photo says "Clarence and Betty".
Still another says "Odon Cook 1936" and he is in a white sailor suit.
Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? I though perhaps he was from
the Oden area and I phoned a Cook in Oden, Indiana but he had never heard
the name. This fellow I spoke with said he was the oldest Cook left now in
that area.
Appreciate any help if this sounds familiar to anyone.
Thanks!

Hello
I would like to correspond with anyone researching any
of the following early settlers of Lawrence Co.,
Indiana: Ambrose or Pleasant Parks and Ambrose
Carlton. They came to LC in 1816.
Ambrose Parks was in Owen Co., Indiana at some point
where a child was born.
I am a descendant of Ambrose Parks and I'm interested
in getting a whole picture of their migration from
Burke Co., NC and their early life in Lawrence Co.,
Indiana.
Ambrose Parks married Elizabeth or Eliza Carlton
daughter of Ambrose and Jean Montgomery Carlton and I
would like to find a descendant of any of her brothers
and sisters.
Thank you,
Kate Ross

I learned today that a cousin remembers seeing a hard bound book with a dark blue cover that was a history about some of the original families (including Thompsons, Martins, Owens, Wilsons) in Owen County Indiana. He has no idea where that book is now or that actual title...
These Thompsons, John and Mary (Martin) Thompson and possibly others, arrived in New York from Belfast, County Down, Ireland in 1849. They were in Owen County Indiana by 1852.
This book supposedly told about the Thompsons and Martins as well as Owens and Wilsons that all traveled together to Owen Co.
Does this book ring any bells with anyone... have you seen this book!!!??? What a find that would be.
Thanks for any help or hints,
Terresa
You said you have found nothing on Al and Mary Elizabeth Cook, so I'm
assuming you have not searched the census. I found the following possibility:
1870 Census
Alton Cook, age 19, living in Jackson Twp., Owen County, with Daniel Noyer,
dwelling 21, family 21
Niles Alton Cook, born about 1851 in Indiana, was the son of Joseph & Mary
Cook. Niles A. married Mary E. Anderson in Owen County, Jan. 29, 1871. They
divorced. Mary E. Anderson married John Miller in Putnam County, Dec. 11,
1879. Niles Alton and Mary had two daughters, Permelia “Melia” and Lavina.
Lavina married William H. Knoll, Sep.22, 1892 in Owen County. Mary is buried
in Fertig or Fertick Cem, Jackson Tw (31 Dec 1851-5 Jun 1937).
Perhaps Joseph died (didn’t have time to look at cemetery book). Mary Cook
married Daniel Neier in Owen County, Sep 17, 1865. Mary is also buried in
Fertig/Fertick Cemetery (4 Jan 1801-10 Sep 1878).
Ran out of time and couldn't do any more this morning. This is not my
family.
Glorianne
Hi!
I found an old obituary of my great-grandmother, Permelia
Cook Routt. Who was born December 8, 1873. It said
her parents were Al and Mary Elizabeth Cook . Permelia was born in Jackson Township , Owen County. I can't find anything on her father Al Cook, does anyone?
Thanks,
Rhonda Tincher

Joshua W. Bailey, GIS Manager for Owen County
To Speak January 16, 2007
Technology Used in Locating Cemeteries and Other "Lost Properties"
It is not uncommon to find people from all over the country who have come to our Sweet Owen County in search of their "roots". One of the challenges in being a genealogist is to find the cemeteries where elusive ancestors are said to be buried. Many of these cemeteries are no longer cared for and have been "lost".
It recently came to our attention that Josh Bailey, GIS Manager for Owen County, had located some old records in the lower vaults of the courthouse. He checked on a few of the records and found that he had come upon a mystery. Some of the properties were no longer a part of the county's records and some of these properties were old cemeteries.
There are several properties which are not shown to belong to anyone and they are not in the tax rolls. Josh is working with the county's GIS system to plot the county records and is also using satellite views for really close up views. This new satellite mapping technology allows the viewer to close in and actually see the leaves on the trees and to locate roads leading to the property.
Everyone is invited to come to the Owen County Public Library's meeting room on the upper level. Come and listen to Josh Bailey explain this new tool that will prove to be valuable to anyone interested in locating properties within the county.
Come join us on January 16th at 7:00 PM, 10 S. Montgomery Street, Spencer, Indiana.
As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. Come and learn about your county!
Sincerely,
Terresa Thompson, President
