Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
After all the e-mailing that was done I thought we would have heard by now what the Commissioners decided to do. Did someone tell them it was not there place? I guess what I am really wanting ot know is what happened?

Hello all,
I have had several requests for information on the results of our meeting
with the Owen County Commissioners.
You will recall that we were meeting to offer a proposal for the handling of
the old county records. Our proposal was to use some of the available space
in the lower level of the courthouse for temporarily housing some, if not
all, of the old records. We were hoping to find a way to defer the shipping
of the records to the State Archives for a period long enough to give us an
opportunity to scan and preserve the images. The county's attorney said
that there was no room available in the courthouse and that funds were not
available for the county to help in housing.
They agreed to give us some time to arrange for local housing of the records
and that is what we are going to be working on. That is all of the
information I have for you at the moment. I don't expect much to be decided
until after the Thanksgiving holiday, but will let you know as events
unfold.
Thank you all for your support and words of encouragement. I do wish that
all of you were here in Owen County and could get involved.
Best to you all and happy hunting and enjoy your families this Thanksgiving
Holiday!

Subject: [INOWEN] Old County Records for Owen County - Update on
currentsituation
November 16, 2006
Hello OCHGS members and friends of the old Owen County records,
To bring you up-to-date on the old county records which are currently
being stored in the old Carnegie Library building which was purchased
earlier this year by the Owen County Heritage and Culture Center (OCHCC).
We have been informed (and it was confirmed in the Spencer Evening World -
November 13th) that the Board of the OCHCC went before the County
Commissioners last week and asked that all of the old county records be
moved to the State Archives in Indianapolis. The records are to be taken to
the State Archives in Indianapolis and they have agreed to store the records
for two years. From our understanding, the Commissioners have agreed.
OCHCC has asked us (OCHGS - Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society)
to have our equipment out of the building by December1st. We are now trying
locate somewhere to store our equipment.
OCHGS has tried to negotiate to have the records kept locally, but were
not successful. I'm not sure that the officials are aware of the
destinction between OCHGS and OCHCC and this may be were the problem lies.
We (OCHGS) will no longer be able to provide research assistance as we have
in the past. This also means that we will not be able to continue with our
research or our project of digitizing all of the old records. I have been
in the process of trying to acquire a camera tripod setup for our digitizing
of the large books. This project will now have to be put on hold.
Since the State will only hold the records for two years, we are still
not sure of the long-term housing or a permanent solution. We stand to lose
this valuable resource. So far, we (OCHGS) have not been included in any of
the planning and I'm not sure we will have any influence. This is
frustrating because the records were retrieved from the basement of the
courthouse and archived through the efforts of Roger Peterson and the OCHGS
(Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society). The Historical Society
went to the expense of purchasing the archival quality boxes and the
shelving for the storage of the old documents. Unfortunately, even though
we have tried to make our voices heard, we now find that we are out of the
loop as far as the decision making process for the future of the records.
We will no longer be able to accept any queries for genealogical
information or research, as all of the indexes and supporting documents will
be in storage in Indianapolis . The exception, of course, will be the
information we (OCHGS) have already scanned and preserved in the genealogy
room of the Owen County Library.
We have also been learned that there is a possibility that some of the
records are going to be purged and we are trying to contact the right people
to see if we can have access to those records before they are destroyed. We
can then scan them and make sure they are preserved. We have called and
asked to be put on the agenda for the Commissioner's meeting this next
Monday morning at 9:00 AM so that we can let it be known that we would like
to be involved. We have not heard yet whether we will be on the agenda.
We have been told that it would help to have interested people attend this
meeting.
I'm not sure if any of our efforts are going to help the situation, but we
have to at least try. We are so lucky to have nearly 200 years of records
depicting the daily lives of our Owen ancestors and we would hate to see any
part of that history discarded. I doubt that we will be successful in
regaining our position as caretakers of the records or at least be included
in the decision making process, but we are hoping. We will keep you
informed as events unfold and the future of the records is decided.
Unfortunately, we have only learned of these key decisions after the fact.
And we have been trying to play catchup and find a resolution. We will be
going to the Commissioners meeting on Monday morning at 9:00 AM and hope to
be able to get back into the loop as to how the records will be handled and
to see if we can again have access and some say as to their disposition. If
you can attend, it would help to show that we have suport and interest.
We hope to see you all at our meeting on the 21st when Julian Livingston
will be talking about his adventures in using DNA to help in his genealogy
research! We will also be having our election of officers for the coming
year.
Regards,
Board of Directors, OCHGS

I've been out of town and have just read all the emails
concerning the old Owen County records.
What a travesty! It is beyond comprehension that anyone would want to be a
party to the moving and/or
destruction of old records. How are we to learn about
our history if we no longer have these?
Please post how much money is needed to supply at least a copy of these
invaluable documents. Shame on the County Commissioners and anyone else
involved in this "crime"

My husband and I are on a very limited income and I can't dontate $$. But
maybe we could do an auction on ebay or something? I don't have the faintest

could find something to donate to the auction.

I am in total agreement with Gwen...we need to keep the records of our past
centrally located to where the research is being done and the historical

I sincerely hope the commissioners room is so crowded tomorrow with people who want to see the books kept in the county where access to them can be attained.
As to where they go, this is not a decision for the OCHCC to tell the Government where to put them. If they have recently purchased the building they are not being fair in the time frame slated for everything to be removed.
You know Commissioners are elected persons and genealogist are famous for remembering things for a long time. Multiply those in the county, add their families who vote, and I would be worried about the next election if the genealogist and family researchers are not treated right. And don't count on any legal help from your judges. Good Luck and may everyone pack out the room tomorrow. Genealogy is the 2nd largest hobby there is, with stamp collecting being number one. But to most of us it is not just a hobby , but a contagious disease and I pray some of your elected officials catch it.

Hi list, I am new to the group and was just starting to try and do some
researching on the Taylor families of Owen CO. My grandmother, Alice Rachel Taylor
was the youngest child of Isaac and Elizabeth Davis Taylor. So sorry to hear
of your trouble there and so sorry to hear that some folks think so little of
why we like to know all these things of our ancestors that we owe so much to. I
just really can't understand the moving of old records to a distant local or
destroying of these precious items. Keep us informed and I beg whom ever makes
these decisions to please rethink all this.

Dear sir, I have great intrest in this issue. I am willing to do all I can to
help in this matter. I seen where you are needing a tripod for taking
pictures of these records. I have a table tripod that I think would be perfect for
this. I bought it and I have never used it yet. I will be happy to donate it for
taking pictures of the records like you were saying. I live in Jackson Co.

I would be more than happy to help financially to:
1) find a good home for the records
2) help get them digitized.
The whole idea of moving the records to Indy is dumb.

I'd be glad to donate as well.....if there is a need, then someone [local]
can let us all know through this list after the meeting next Monday and then
we can proceed from there after they find out exactly what is going to happen
to everything and what they will need. Only wish I lived closer so I could
volunteer my time as well.

We'll know more after the Commissioners meeting on Monday.
