I was asked to post some of the words of the dedication and some of the
genealogy by a lady involved with Owen Co., IN, research. I will gladly
post the speech, but I may only post a limited genealogy; the reason being
is the data is being reserved for the forthcoming Fender Family Genealogy
book.

The Dedication Speech was written by a GGGGG-Granddaughter:
DEDICATION OF THE MONUMENT
ERECTED FOR
NIMROD & SARAH FENDER
JUNE 5, 2004
About 1766, Nimrod Fender was born in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, a
son of Christian and Anna Maria Fender. As a small lad, he was uprooted from
that beautiful valley as he and his parents journeyed to a new home on the
frontier of North Carolina, in a time when Indian raids were still not
unheard of.
As a boy, Nimrod, as boys are apt to do, caught frogs and tadpoles in the
waters of Dutchman's Creek. Around the age of fifteen, his parents moved
northwest to North Deep Creek on the Yadkin River, and there in his youth,
he met and married the love of his life, his beloved Sarah.
Soon their home was filled with little steps taken by tiny feet, patty-cake
and peek-a-boo, as the children one by one arrived, first Absalom, then
Daniel, and John.
Perhaps Nimrod was overwhelmed with these new responsibilities, or it could
have been the phenomenon of the new marriage and three little sons so soon,
the first hurdle husband and wife must overcome. He was accused and found
guilty of fathering a child outside his marriage in 1792, but Sarah forgave
his indiscretion, and they were blessed with more toothless smiles on
giggling tiny faces, Mary, Nancy, Susan, Sarah, David, Elizabeth and
Frances.
Ever searching for a place in which to raise and provide for his children,
Nimrod and Sarah moved to Wilkes County, NC, and finally across the crest of
the Blue Ridge Mountains into where the maps now read Alleghany. There amid
the blue mountain tops, bubbling brooks, and wild mountain rivers, Nimrod
prospered.
His sons grew tall, his daughters strong and healthy, into young men and
young women, who soon engaged in matrimony with local families; the
Tollivers, Coxes, Grosses, Edwards, Crouses, Basses, and Whitakers. By 1820
there were many more tiny faces who had little hands and tiny fingers to
hold Nimrod's finger as he walked toward home.
Perhaps it was the icy winters on the mountaintops, or the great cruel
whirlwinds, or the cold drenching rains, or the infertile land; we know not,
but soon after 1823, little eyes cried and tiny faces kissed the cheeks of
their Paw Paw and Maw Maw one last time, for Nimrod & Sarah left North
Carolina to come here to Indiana.
Documentation shows that by 1830, Nimrod and Sarah were here and it was
home.
Two of the children married into Indiana families; Mitchell and Beasley,
Soon, more tiny fingers of grandchildren arrived to wrap a chubby hand in
Nimrod's calloused hands and call him Paw Paw, and others sat in Sarah's lap
as she rocked them to sleep.
What a journey of life fraught with love, regrets, work, tears, joy and
family!
Ever by his side, Sarah and Nimrod completed their journey hand in hand,
until death did they part.
He provided for his beloved Sarah a comfortable home and furnishings and a
looking glass. By the looking glass we know that Nimrod & Sarah had
materially prospered in their journey as looking glasses were not a
necessity, but a novelty of wealth. That looking glass, perhaps a gift to
Sarah, once cast a reflection of Sarah and Nimrod and we now cast their
reflections into our own family looking glass, and we dedicate this memorial
stone to our grandparents - Nimrod & Sarah Fender - because we are Nimrod &
Sarah's children, and because of their journey of life and their love, we
live.

This is so great! Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
I was so glad that one of the photos shows exactly what's said on the stone.
Would it be possible to post some of the words of the dedication, and to post the genealogy? I don't see (yet) that we're related, but I'm very interested. Also, your family made a similar trip from NC to Indiana, as did my family.
