Mike & BOB.... There were at least 6 John CARTERs in Owen County at that
time... Unfortunately, the one who has "all the ink" in the histories is not
the one that I am tracing... I think that they were probably related, but,
have nothing to prove it... The John CARTER who married Betsy Vickery GOSS,
Mary Evans Clark, and Patsy Singleton, was the most influential of the
Johns in Owen... He had a son, John JR...
"MY" John was a Jr., but, not this one. I have no idea who his
parents were...
The John who married the 3 ladies had a John, his son John had a
John, his brother William had a John, who eventually married the widow of
"MY" John's son COLUMBIA CARTER.
In answer to your question, John Jr, son of the "Other" John CARTER,
was born in Owen County June 9, 1839, married a Margaret King, and died
about 1926 in Kansas...
Both of you please get back with me, and perhaps we can do something
with this... I need Help...
Also, which John are you both researching??? Thanks.

Searching for parents of John CARTER, born 1-2-1813,in Ky.. died
2-27-1901, Putnam Co., Indiana
Although I know that people migrated quite frequently and seemingly at whim, there seems to have been certain times that more people went from one region such as Owen county into other specific states in large groupings, perhaps not altogether but many around the same time.
I seem to have lost (or misplaced) several different groups of families around the time frame of 1854-1860. Many ancestors who were seemingly successful in the Owen county areas for many years just suddenly up and move off. Some of these are:
JAMES BALDWIN-- he was a major landowner in the Montgomery and Wayne twp areas since about 1821.Very active in community activities and in the Little Mount Church. I have records of census, church and then finally land records with the latest being about 1856. He then vanishes...not uncommon I guess, but later I find information in the history book of Hancock county, IL pertaining to his son, John. Reference is made to his parents migration from Owen county to MO where they apparently lived and died, no mention however of just what county this was. Also no mention of WHEN this was except that it was prior to the CW as the son states that he enlisted with the union forces from Missouri; giving rise to the thought that they were there prior to the start of the CW. The history book I cite was printed in 1910, so of course since my James was born in 1791, he was long since dead. I do know from the land sale records here, that he was still here as late as 1856.
CHILDREN OF ROBERT McCULLOUGH
Robert McCullough had 9 children and sometime I am assuming after his death, 7 of them signed over what was Robert's land to William Guinn in April of 1853. Five of those children had been residing around that property in the 1850 census and then in the 1860 census two are found in the Gosport area; three of them sort of vanish. This gives me reason to think they left the area.
Others of the Baldwin/Boldon, Asher and Truax names left and went to Iowa/MO or Kansas. Some of the Goss surname went to MO.
I know that there was the Homestead Act of 1862, but this was much before that.
Does anyone have any families that left Owen county around the 1856-1860 time frame and is there a reason? Do many of them go to Missouri?
It seems too early to have been aware of the coming Civil War...Was this a slavery issue?
I know that Missouri was a free slave state and that later in the late 1800's there was a large land push to MO due to there crops when most of the nation was in a drought, but this 1856-1860 time frame has me stumped.
Any help is appreciated.

I am interested in conversing with anyone who has the following in Owen county:
An ancestor with the surname of CHAMBERS in the early 1830's in or around the Wayne, Montgomery or Taylor twp areas.
An ancestor with the surname of CHAMBERS who died in the 1830's in or around the Wayne, Montgomery or Taylor twp areas.
An ancestor with a surname of CHAMBERS who may have married someone who was named ARLITTA/ARLINA/ALETTA/ALLITA.
Any researcher with probate records for a CHAMBERS in or around the 1830's time frame.
Thanks

I would interested in exchanging information with anyone researching ANY Carter lineages in Owen county, it doesn't matter which line you are working with.
Thanks

In my book it says:

"Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past."
(Deuteronomy 32:7a)
On the 1840 Census record, (Schedule of the whole number of persons within
the division, etc) what is the last column? The one I have got lost in the
photo. Also, on the column headed Agriculture, how could they have more in
the family employed in agriculture, than there were in the family? Am I
missing something here???
Also, does anyone know if there is a FREE "Spamkiller" available on the
internet??? Thanks.

Carrie A. MORRIS married Ida (DAVIS) HANCOCK July 19, 1900 in Monroe Co., IN. Ida died a few weeks later on August 2, 1900 in Clay Twp., Owen Co., IN. What happened to him after that? I have not located them in the 1900 census either.
Ida had two daughters, Pansy (b.1894) & June (b.1898). I've found Pansy in the 1900 census with her grandparents, Robert & Mary (SWAFFORD) GILLILAND, but not June?
Ok listmembers I am needing help AGAIN!!
John Cain married Hannah McCullough on July 25 1844 in Owen county, IN. They had 8 children as per the 1860 census.
They are found residing in the Montgomery twp area in the 1850 census and in the Wayne twp Gosport area in the 1860.
In the 1870, Hannah is shown as the head of the household, giving reason to believe that John has died.
Hannah is found in the 1880 residing in the household of her son, William N in Jennings twp.
There is no divorce registered and logic says that John died sometime prior to 1870.
Question: Where is he buried? Is he buried? Did he die at that time?
One researcher states that I won't find Hannah except perhaps in the cemetery attached to Logansport Mental Hospital but offers no reasoning for this theory.
Why Logansport anyway? Why not Evansville?
Any suggestions?

When my father(Robert Maegerlein)married my mother Linda Rosella Brown(she
was adopted so her name was became Mong)I have no clue if that is even on
record. I do hope to find out.
I want to know how my family on my fathers side(Loren Maegerlein who married
my grandmother Althea Maegerlein(Stahl)? How did they get here and what date?
Whi was my grandmothers parents and who was my grandfathers? What did they
do?
Were they crafters, etc?
In Patricksburg at one time they operated a mill which is now the old Dubois
Mill..how did that come to be?
Was the mill use for things other than a sawmill?
It would be great to find out some of these things. Is there a way to
preserve Patricksburg when I come home for visits I get sick. My grandfather
and grandmothers house is almost down because of neglect and the fact that
whoever lived behind them is now making a junkyard out of it which is not
real sanitary to P'burg it would be great to make it look nostalgic like I
remember. My grandma Althea worked in a restaurant where the food was
sooooooo good. Please tell me anything you can.
I just want to remember and write down things I have missed that I did not
care about as a child.
Thank you and God Bless

I realize that today is the anniversary of one of the most tragic events in American History. None of us can possibly forget it.
I hope though that we can all continue as normal and remember them also. As many of you remember this was one of the few lists remaining open and allowing comments regarding it.
If any of you feel that you need to make a comment, this is fine as I know that for several of you, this is your only outlet.
I don't however wish to have our entire list only comments on this tragedy. To not continue with our daily lives and to let the terrorists hinder our pasttimes is to give them more power...more then deserved.
My personal feeling is that the victim's families will be suffering enough with the first anniversary of the deaths of their loved ones and I feel that they should be allowed to grieve in peace and private without having to be exposed to it all again all day long.
