Since the Hilsabeck and related families migrated from North Carolina to Owen Co, IN, what route were they likely to have taken? Also, a few generations later when the related families migrated from Owen Co to Iowa, what route were they likely to have taken then?
Elizabeth Chain
My family surnames are Hilsabeck, Fiscus, Arney, Ellsberry, Speas, Fulk, Volk, Geiger, Kiger, Hudspeth, Winters, Hartman, Boyles.

I hope that everyone isn't as confused as I am...
In doing my research, I have noticed a trend, as I am sure that you have.
Migration from Ky to Owen Co.,Indiana, usually was from Nelson, Shelby, or
Spencer Counties. With Shelby and Spencer being thru Nelson, apparently due
to County line changes...
If there was further migration, it seemed to nearly always be to Parke Co.,
In., to Vermillion Co., In., to Vermillion Co., Il, to Douglas Co., Il, to
Edgar Co., Il, to Hancock Co., Il., and then to Keokuk or Washington Co.,
Ia.
Can anyone explain this? Was it due to various land rushes, re;igious
followings, or what?
If there was a stop between Ky and Owen Co., In., can anyone tell me what
county would be the most likely to have been "Visited"?
Have I confused you? Or, am I only "tilting at windmills"?
Thanks,
Dick Carter

Richard, Here are the looku-ups you requested for Andrew Pitman family in

This is surely the family you are searching for as there are no
Pittman/Pitman families in BBTwp.

Richard, I don't know anything about this family, but, I am wondering if
Margare's age is wrong as the sequence is quite a large jump from 9-18-5.
You should know though. The census noted she attended school within the
year.
If you are in need of other look-ups in either BBTwp (1850 or 1870) or in
1850 or 1860 Owen Co I can do that. I also have Mon Co Census Books for
1860-1880-1900 & 1920.
Hope this helps. Peggy Andrews

I am looking for information on these three names Kemmerer, Putnam, Tate.
It is believed that they lived in Freedom, Owen County from 1863 to
1900. Any info would help.

Debbie,
I think you're doing a wonderful job! ANYTHING you add to your Owen Co.
website is greatly appreciated by me and, I am sure, by many others. As far
as I am concerned, take your time and post the data at your leisure in any
order you feel comfortable with.
Thanks for providing so much data for Owen County researchers.

Listmembers:
After getting home and attempting to get started back on this website, I am gathering that there has been some discussion as to posting on the mailing list versus updates on the website.
One activity has nothing whatsoever to do with the other. This mailing list has been in operation long before I began the website and is a separate endeavor altogether; it just so happens that the two items work together.
When I don't post to the website, nobody should cease searching for their ancestors...
Although some people are avid about the completion of the Riverside cemetery on the site, there are other items of interest to be posted there also. I thought I had posted fairly alot to the list prior to leaving on vacation, but since that didn't include Riverside Cemetery listings; some consider no updating to be done.
For what it is worth, there were 13 putnam county cemeteries added and 4 owen county cemeteries, plus twp histories and other items.
In answer to questions I have had from volunteers:
In order to be of assistance in transcribing this cemetery, you will need a copy of the Riverside cemetery listing. I cannot send this to you. For reference as to what is needed there, please check the webpage for that cemetery. Please don't suggest that I scan it and send to you as to do that I may as well just place on the site. My copy is not scanning well anyway.
My goal here is to make the entries that will please the greatest amount of persons at one time. When I see 13-15 smaller/older cemeteries being posted as opposed to one section of Riverside, I will most often post the 13-15 cemeteries to help the most researchers.
Riverside WILL get done, just NOT YESTERDAY.

Can anyone tell me exactly where Jeremiah Devore, or, Martin Gillaspy lived

The Hancock family I am looking for: Catherine Hancock married Marion
Brasket 12-22-1867 in Gosport, Owen County. I believe she was born about
1847 or 48 . The family was originally from Campbell County TN. Her
father is William, no mother listed on the 1860 census of Campbell
County. Did they move to Owen County after 1860???? William Hancock is
listed with Catherine and Marion on the 1880 census Madison County.
Any help would be appreciated.

Will someone give me the URL for this page?

Bruce,
I believe that if you are in a" really big hurry" to locate someone at
Riverside Cemetery,,,,,,,,,you may contact the Owen Co. Library and have them
do a lookup for you, or if you go online to the Owen Co. website there are
voluteers there that will also do cemetery lookups.
Owen County, Indiana or use the URL:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inowen/owenindx.html
you will find the email add of both the Library and the lookup person on this
website.......Good luck to you.

"Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past."
(Deuteronomy 32:7a)
Bruce, and any other interested party. I know that Debbie works EVERYDAY on
the Sweet Owen web page, along with 4 other web pages that she has. She is
also administrator of a number of mail lists.
As far as the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer... I believe that it runs to
144 pages, and I KNOW that she has asked for volunteers to help with the
typing...I also know that she does devote some time to Riverside everyday...
SINCE THIS IS A VOLUNTARY OPERATION, WE CANNOT VERY WELL DEMAND THAT SHE
DEVOTE FULL TIME, EVERY DAY TO IT...
You state that the site hasn't been updated since June 6...Well, gee, that
is 6 days ago. She has been on vacation on 4 of those days...So I don't
believe that we can fault her too much.(That doesn't mean she hasn't been
working on it.) And, if you will notice, the Web page was updated on June 5,
and before that of June 3, That is 3 out of 4 days...Come on, this is
information available on the FIRST PAGE... I didn't check other pages...
Anyone interested in helping with the typing of 144 pages of the Riverside
Cemetery records would be a very welcome addition to her one person staff...
Also, I did not say that I was not hearing from anyone. I said that there
had been NO traffic on the list...I don't believe that traffic on the OWEN
LIST has anything to do with whether Debbie's Web page has been updated or
not.

One of the reasons you aren't hearing from anyone is that your web site
is not being updated. It hasn't been updated since June 6th this time
and before that it hadn't been updated for a while. I am waiting for
someone to finish the Riverside Cemetery listing before I do any more
heavy lifting!!!!

Can anyone out there help this lady. I cannot.

I am Maurine Denkewalter and my husband's great grandfather was Dr.
Frederick William Denkewalter who owned the land of what is now McCormick's
Creek state park. I have been to Spencer and to the Canyon Inn. Found lots
of interesting material in the Spencer Library archives 20 years ago. I am
once again back on the hunt for more information. Dr. D. has many
relatives living in Ohio. His son, Fred, married Cora Ritter and she was
from Owen Co. , too. I would like to piece the puzzle to-gether for future
generations. I would appreciate any directions you could give to my
project.
Thank you. Maurine Denkewalter
