Dear Fellow Listmembers,
Having descended from Owen County's McCartys, Goodwins, Combs, Martins and
others I have a strong attachment and interest in local history. I am a
paleontologist at the University of Florida's Museum of Natural History and
I'm researching personal accounts of the 1811 New Madrid Earthquake, whose
epicenter was near New Madrid, Missouri, a small village on the Mississippi
River. The magnitude of this earthquake was of sufficient intensity that it
must have been felt in Owen County as well as the rest of southern Indiana
and Kentucky. Of course, I have copies of the Crist family diaries. This
early Owen County family had moved to Owen County from Kentucky in an
attempt to distance themselves from the earthquake's aftershocks and any
future major quakes. The diaries entries describe, first hand, that
family's awesome, and traumatic experiences with the earthquake and the
following aftershocks.
Such catastrophic events, though rare, are sometimes prime movers in the
migration and movement of families from one area to another, and certainly
provided a valid reason for many families coming to Owen County.
Considering, it's terrifying and widespread impact, there must surely be
any other personal accounts recorded or handed down by other families as
well. I would certainly appreciate corresponding with anyone who has
information on first person accounts of this significant event.
Sincerely,
Russell McCarty

In my researching I have recently fallen into the habit of making a "scoop" of ALL the persons of a surname in a given area and later with much searching, finding out that they all later connect somehow and somewhere, some quite unexpectedly.
Although perhaps not the best form of researching it has proved fruitful for the most part.
So with that in mind, I am currently putting out a request for information on the following family lines:
BALDWIN/BALDON; CARTER; McCULLOUGH; MURPHY; JONES
At the current time I am not concerned with which lines they are in I am sorting them all out one at a time. So if anyone has any information on these surnames within the Owen area, any assistance would be much appreciated.

I am interested in conversing with anyone who has the following in Owen county:
An ancestor with the surname of CHAMBERS in the early 1830's in or around the Wayne, Montgomery or Taylor twp areas.
An ancestor with the surname of CHAMBERS who died in the 1830's in or around the Wayne, Montgomery or Taylor twp areas.
An ancestor with a surname of CHAMBERS who may have married someone who was named ARLITTA/ARLINA/ALETTA/ALLITA.
Any researcher with probate records for a CHAMBERS in or around the 1830's time frame.

I am searching for anyone who is researching one of the Jones families of Owen county. There were several of them, but the one I am interested in is:
Jesse Jones b. 10-6-1824 d. 1-9-1888
he married 4-25-1839
Sarah Young b. 4-27-1825 d. 11-8-1912
They were married in Union county, IN. Jesse's place of birth is given as NC and Sarah's as VA. Sarah's parents were in the Union county area in the 1830 census.
There were several children born to this couple.
Elijah b. about 1841 m. Chistina Shoppell 4-24-1866
William b. about 1843 m. Mary Kelly 11-17-1861
James b. about 1844 no futher info
Thomas Jefferson b. 7-26-1847 m. Harriet Elizabeth Sweeney 9-14-1873
John b. about 1853 m. Minnie Beaman 12-23-1875
Emily b. about 1855 m. Enos Day
Anderson b. 3-13-1857 m. Frances Catherine Knipe 1-18-1880
Harrison b. 1865 no other info
Daniel b. 1865 no other info
Sampson b. about 1850 m. Minerva McClure 11-24-1868
I am trying to find out the parents of Jesse Jones.
I am also trying to find out just how or if this Jones line connects with the other Jones lines in and around the Owen/Putnam county areas.
Thank you for any assistance

I am searching for information regarding:
Charles MURPHY b. 1760-1770 in Montgomery co. MD
He married possibly to Ann Eliott.
The family resided in Nelson county KY from about 1794-just after the 1830 census.
He appears in the Harrison township area of Owen county in the 1840 census living next door to McKinney BALDWIN, who married his daughter Mary Ann.
One the other side of him is living his daughter Margaret who married William CRUTCHFIELD. In the house next to Margaret Crutchfield is Benjamin MURPHY, son of the above Charles.
There is little doubt that this is one and the same Charles Murphy as resided in Nelson county KY.
I am trying to find out what became of this Charles as he never appears again in the records, I mean, common sense dictates that he died, but WHEN? WHERE IS HE BURIED?
There is a listing in the Probate Records of a matter of Charles Murphy and the heir is Benjamin. However, there is another Charles Murphy in and around the Owen/Putnam areas about the same time...
I am trying to ascertain which one died in 1842 and the exact date.
Any help is appreciated.

Looking for information regarding:
Peter SMITH who married Margaret SWEENEY on September 4, 1873 in Putnam county.

Margaret was born June-August of 1859 in Illinois, although her parents resided in Greencastle. She was the daughter of John G. SWEENEY and Rutha BRADSHAW. Margaret died sometime after 1918.
Peter and Margaret had the following children:

James R. b. 1876 m. Della M. Townsend
Gertie b. 1879
Jacob L. b. 1-6-1882 m. Lora B. Knoll
Male child b. 12-4-1883
Albert A. b. 11-12-1892 m. Mary E. Jones
Rutha b. 8-7-1894 d. infancy
Female Child b. 10-24-1896
Any information about this family is much appreciated.

The weather in Indiana is turning cold and I like all the other little squirrels am gathering my nuts (or vice versa) for winter supply and researching, so....
Lets get some queries on the list for us to work on this winter, unless of course I am the only one who doesn't know where I came from --
I know who most everyone is researching, but there are new subscribers and maybe someone has some answers out there.
For the new subscribers, just make a posting to the list with the following:
Who or what family you are researching?
When they were born/died or in Owen county
any other pertinent info such as parents, children, locations, whatever to help others help you.
Please place the SURNAME in the subject line and don't just hit the reply button. Make a new posting to the list.
Good Luck everyone!!

The above soldiers are most likely the same man. It was common
during the Rev War and War of 1812 for men to serve in one unit then
the unit would disband because the organizing Captain was promoted
or killed. The unit would be re-organized under another Captain. Since
the listings above are Cavalry and Militia, perhaps the soldier's horse
died or was killed (soldier's had to provide their own mounts) and he
couldn't find another and transfered into the Militia. Or perhaps the
soldier was wounded or injured and was unable to march. If the
soldier could supply his own horse he would have transferred into the
Cavalry. If you order records for the above soldier from the National
Archives be sure to send a separate request for each unit in which the
soldier served.
