Saturday, September 22, 2001, the Morgan County History and Genealogy
Association will host a tombstone repair/resetting/cleaning workshop.
The workshop will take place at the Mahalasville Cemetery, southeast
of Martinsville at 1:00 in the afternoon.
John Walters of Fayette County, noted tombstone repairman and
recoverer, will present it. He will be showing us how to repair
tombstones, how to reset them and clean them.
The Mahalasville Cemetery is located as follows:
SOUTHBOUND S.R. 37 at Martinsville (first stoplight is at S.R. 44;
second stoplight is at S.R. 252, third stoplight is Mahalasville Road)
to Mahalasville Road; turn left onto Mahalasville Road, go about 5
miles to Voyles Road and turn left there. The cemetery is on the
right at the top of the hill you will be going up, about 1/4 mile
from Mahalasville Road.
NORTHBOUND S.R. 37 at Martinsville (first stoplight is Burton Lane;
second stoplight is Mahalasville Road) to Mahalasville Road; turn
right onto Mahalasville Road, go about 5 miles to Voyles Road and turn
left there. The cemetery is on the right at the top of the hill you
will be going up, about 1/4 mile from Mahalasville Road.
All of our programs, unless otherwise noted, are free and open to the
public.
God bless America!

The candle light will always be gleaming through the sycamores.
The latch string is always out.
The 1830 census shows James COFFELT HH listed on page
265 , ,Clay, Indiana 1 m age 20-30, 2 m 5-10, 1 m 10-15, 1 f 30-40
next door to him is George COFFELT HH
1 m age 50-60 1m 5-10, 2m 10-15, 1 f 50-60
I believe George COFFELT is the father of James and that
the other sons are Daniel, James Henry, and George Jr.
James COFFELT married Nancy HICKS, daughter of Robert HICKS
and Sarah JORDAN. James and Nancy had 6 children, 5 whose
names I know: George W., Mahala E., John Robert, Lydia M., and
Nancy. Other surnames associated with this family are:
NASALROAD, HALTOM, STARK, STARKEY, SHAFFER, RUNYAN,
GRAVES, BIVANS, PARR, KESNER. This family lived in Clay and
Owen County, Indiana and eventually Missouri, Ohio, and Kansas.
Happy to share.

Andrew Pittman, born 9-14-1798, Nelson Co Ky.,in Owen Co In., 1830 w/7
children, 1840, with 4 children, ands in Monroe Co., In, 1850..
Perhaps married before 1822 in Nelson, also married 5-23-1822, in Nelson
Elizabeth NUTTERFEE/NUTTERFIELD, born 7-10-1810.
Perhaps divorced from Elizabeth before 1831, as she married a John CARTER,
KY or In, about 1831-32...
Does anyone have any definite information on this Andrew PITTMAN???
Also, in Owen County, In., we have the following PITTMANS... Need any
information on them also... Were they children of the above Andrew PITTMAN??
Andrew J. Pittman, m. Nancy Jane Nichols,1841...
Jesse PIttman, m. Mary Emeline Hurt, 1844.
Rebecca PITTMAN, m. Henry CURL, 1844.
Samuel, m. Lucretia Hopper, 1851. Jacob, m. Elizabeth Chambers, 1860.
William, b. 1831, In KY. Nancy, b. 1829, In KY.
Simpson, 1832, In Ky.
Asa, 1834, in KY
John, 1836, In KY.
Also, there is a marriage of an ANDREW PITTMAN, to a MILLY ZIMMERMAN, in
Spencer Co., KY, 7-31-1837. Is this the same Andrew PITTMAN shown in Owen
CO., In., above???
Any help appreciated..
I am looking for information on THOMAS C. HUTTON & AUGUST WEDDING. They were both from Washington County, Virginian, and moved to Owen County, Indiana in the late 1830s. In the Owen County, Indiana 1840 Census are THOMAS and MARY HUTTON and their children, and AUGUSTUS and SARAH WEDDING and their children. THOMAS' son MOSES H. HUTTON married ELIZA ANN GILLASPY February 2, 1837 in Owen Co. Indiana. I believe Thomas HUTTON had another son in Owen County, named ELIJAH HUTTON. He married VERNILDA STEELE July 20, 1846 in Owen County, Indiana. Thomas HUTTON and his wife are in the Owen County Census in 1840, 1850, 1860. I have not seen an 1870 Census, but they are not in the 1880 Census. Moses H. HUTTON and his wife moved to MO, and are in the 1860 Census in Macon County, MO. In the 1880 Census they are in Putnam County, Indiana.

I have a follow-up question: Does anyone know where the name "Quincy"
originated? I had an IN ancestor ("uncle") named Quincy Short, and
there were others in that line as well. I've always kind of wondered....
Thanks!

Hello List! Regarding the photo I have of Della Bowen and my ggrandma Belle

Listmembers:
I have attempted to include everything from our pages of before. I am running
into several stumbling blocks and come up with the following solutions.
1.Many of the items in the File Cabinets are just HUGE. I mean like, 2-4 MGs
which are long in loading among other things...
so I have opted to have a page listing: who has the item and what item they
have, and also include that person's email so anyone interested can contact
them to obtain the info.
2. There are several entries in the File Cabinet of "Descendants of"...these
are great, however, some of them are listing living persons with dates and
some with SS numbers...in all good conscience I just cannot place those on a
public website.
These need to be "privatized" for the public internet, so anyone having those
I would appreciate you going in and editing them.
I am not refusing to place anything on the pages and am looking for way to
get our info out any way possible. If I can get it on the page, I am using
it. However, there are just these few areas that I am running into problems.
I would like anyone's opinion on the first option of placing a listing of who
has what on one page for persons to contact them.
Also, I have no capabilities for the family trees that we had on the page and
am looking for another solution and think that perhaps Gedcoms may be the
answer to that....hopefully I can get this all done by this weekend and get
back to just plain researching.....

By the way everyone:
These pages are not at present anywhere near done. They need ALOT of
polishing.
I am working on them here and there in different areas.
If since the pages at myfamily.com were private pages, if anyone has/had
anything on them that they don't want on a public page, please take a moment
to let me know and I will delete that item.
The photo section will have to wait till last as it is a real problem. Some
of you may need to resend items in a jpg or gif format, however, I will let
you know about that later on when I come to it.

I have received many different opinions regarding the new website, and I
appreciate them all. I have change the background color as that was a problem
for many.
I now have 24 cemetery listings on the page (many more to go).
If anyone has any of the following, this would be a great time to send them:
BIOS
CEMETERY LISTINGS (partials are just fine)
FAMILY PAGES relating to Owen county families
I am hoping that this page works well for us. We will no longer need to worry
about using the password or being able to access the pages.
Someone earlier expressed concern over the advertisements on the pages, but
as I told them there were also many advertisements on the myfamily pages.
I also wish to make clear to everyone that these pages:
ARE NOT CONNECTED WITH OR REPLACING
the Owen county Historical pages that are put forth by Genweb. These are
simply pages of what we already had on the myfamily site. I used the
SweetOwen name as anything else wouldn't be relating to the pages we had.

As many of you know I have been attempting to move our myfamily.com page over
to another page that would be free.
It is still being done and isn't quite complete.
The url for the page is:
http://www.angelfire.com/in4/sweetowen/
However, as you look at the page, there are many areas that are incomplete at
the present time. I am still in the process of moving the items.
The photos are becoming a major problem as many of them are in different
formats that are not displaying properly and that is where the time is going
on this.
I will be continuing to add the items to this new page and off the old page
for a few days...my main concern being the cemetery listings and obits.
The photos I am certain we can work with as we go.
I would like someone's opinion on the look and style of the page and the info
contained in the categories or rather how they are arranged and if this will
be a serviceable solution.
