Owen County (IN) Journal, Feb 19, 1880, p. 5.
John Chambers was born in North Carolina on Feby 1808 and died Feby 16,
1880, at his home in this township. He emigrated to Indiana in 1819 and
was married to Nancy Parks, Dec. 29th, 1830. He leaves 7 children and 23
grandchildren. He united with the Regular Baptist Church in 1837-38 and
remained a consistent memer to the time of his death. His disease was
consumption which was caused by a fall from a wagon a few years ago. He
was one of the pioneers of this county, a man with many noble traits of
character, many friends and few enemies. May he rest in peace.
Owen County (IN) Journal, Feb 19, 1880, p. 5. NOTE: This Owen County obit
is posted to the INMONROE list because there were Storms in Monroe County
and Susan may be related. Furthermore, I think this obit provides insight
into prevailing attitudes toward unwed mothers in the 1880s.
Susan Storm of Coal City, an unmarried domestic employed in the family of
John W. Beem, was found early Tuesday morning lying upon the floor in her
room in spasms. Drs. Mullinnix and Schell were immediately summoned, and
she soon gave birth to a well developed child. The mother laid in
convulsions about 24 hours when death relieved her of shame and suffering.
Owen County (IN) Journal, Feb 19, 1880, p. 8.
Mrs. Sallie A. Johnson, of Freedom, died last Friday, Feb 13th of
consumption. She was born in Monroe County in 1836, being 44 years old at
the time of her death. Her husband, Noel Johnson, was a private in the
71st Indiana Regiment, and was killed in the battle at Richmond, Ky., in
1862. In her death the Christian Church at this place loses a faithful
member. The sympathy of the community is with the bereaved family in this
their great loss.
Bloomington (IN) Evening World, Dec 16, 1935, p. 1.
GEORGE CRANE, 67, DIED AFTER LONG ILLNESS
George H. Crane, 67, died at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis early
Sunday morning after an illness of two years. He had been in Indianapolis
since the 17th of September.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Clyde Jones and Mrs. Virgil Emmert
of this city and Mrs. Wendell Baxter of R. R. 6; two sons, John Crane of
Gosport, R. R. 3, and William J. Crane of this county; three brothers,
Asbury Crane of Belmont, Joseph Wesley Crane of Temple City, Calif., and
Thomas Crane of Belmont; and nine grandchildren. His wife preceded him in
death 20 years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at the Day Funeral Home in
charge of the Rev. W. C. Chafin. Interment will be in the Rose Hill
Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the home at 1402 West Fifth Street
until funeral time.
Pallbearers will be John Jackson, Wilbur Thompson, Elmer Crane, Bert
Engledow, Glenn Cirgin and Sylvester Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be
Eddie Eckels, Q. Austin East, E. S. Poole, William Rush, Charles Ramsey and
James Brock.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge.

Hi, folks,
While antiquing in Martinsville yesterday I came across a book of Freeman
family history written in 1910 and privately published. This particular
family came from North Carolina and settled in various parts of Indiana
including Owen County, Monroe County (Brummett's Creek), Greene County and
Clinton County.
It starts with Macajah Freeman and goes through four generations. Although
no date of birth is noted for Macajah, his son was born in 1809. That you
give you some idea of the period this book covers.
The book is 32 pages long with an additional eight pages of great
photographs. Almost every name includes a date of birth along with a date
of marriage where applicable. I'm going to make copies of this book for
the Owen and Monroe County libraries. And I'm willing to make copies for
others as well. The cost is $5.00. Because this old book is fragile, I'm
only going to copy from it once. So if you want a copy, please let me know
as soon as possible.

For those of you who may be interested in this topic:
Ancestry.com and Rootsweb has announced yesterday a merger of these two
companies.
Many persons seem to be concerned about this, but I think in all fairness we
should wait and see what, if any changes will occur.
I have been assured that the Rootsweb lists and associated items on the
internet will remain free access and as they have always been.
MyFamily.com is a subsidiary of Ancestry.com and many of you use this or
have used it. There has been alot of talk on alot of mailing lists regarding
this.
If you choose to discuss it, then please do it among yourselves and not on
the list. Both companies are promising no changes in the mailing lists so
lets not let it take over our list, leave this for research.
I am posting this only as a way of keeping you informed, many of you should
not even notice a difference. Below is in part what has been sent to the
listowners. The is a link at the bottom for any further information.
Thanks
Debbie Jennings

============================================================
MyFamily.com, Inc., the leading online family network, announced today that
it
has entered into an agreement to acquire RootsWeb.com, the oldest and
largest
free community genealogy site. RootsWeb.com will continue to be free to all
users and will maintain its own unique URL at http://www.rootsweb.com.
"This is truly a winning combination for both organizations and for the
millions
of users who make up our audiences," said Greg Ballard, CEO of MyFamily.com,
Inc.
The union will provide RootsWeb.com with the financial backing to expand and
the
business structure needed to focus on preserving, sharing, and exchanging
family
history records. As part of the MyFamily.com network of sites, the
RootsWeb.com
site will be able continue its tradition of free access to information with
additional technology tools, increased family research content, and a
greater
range of genealogical resources.
"RootsWeb.com fits well with the MyFamily.com vision of creating the largest
and
most active online resource for families and family history research," said
Dr.
Brian Leverich, founder of RootsWeb.com. "This agreement will expand the
number
of RootsWeb.com users and content contributors. At the same time, we have
ensured that RootsWeb.com content, services, mailing lists, and Web pages
will
remain free, while allowing the site to provide more functionality and
resources
to a larger audience as a result of our being part of the MyFamily.com
network."
Ancestry.com, part of the MyFamily.com network, has a seventeen-year history
of
publishing award-winning books, magazines, and CDs, and currently offers
more
than 600 million records and over 2,500 databases. More than half of the
data is
freely accessible to all Web users. Ancestry.com also hosts, free of charge,
the
Ancestry World Tree and Online Family Tree software, which allow users to
connect and collaborate with other researchers who are working on the same
lines. Ancestry.com users retain ownership of their data, and the company
pledges never to charge for access to that data or to publish it. For those
who
prefer to keep their information a little closer to home, sister site
MyFamily.com allows users to create free, private sites that can be used to
post
family history data, share news and photos with family, chat online, and
much
more.
RootsWeb.com is a valuable resource for family historians, with interactive
guides, discussion lists, and numerous tools for tracing one's ancestry; it
hosts more than 17,000 independently authored Web sites and about 19,000
mailing
lists. All of these services will remain free to users.
As part of its ongoing commitment to the genealogical community,
MyFamily.com,
Inc. will also continue to support RootsWeb.com-affiliated volunteer,
non-profit
organizations, such as The USGenWeb Project, Immigrant Ship Transcribers
Guild,
The Free Births, Marriages, and Deaths Projects, and other groups that
provide
free genealogical content.
The MyFamily.com acquisition of RootsWeb.com promises to make it easier than
ever for family historians everywhere to discover their heritage.

I am looking to trace and link my Washington Adams with his proper
family. Washington Adams was born in OH (don't know where) about 1811
or 1812. In the 1830 Owen County census there is a Washington Adams
shown with the age of
15-20 which would fit my Washington. I understand there is a wife age
20-30 and a son age 0-5. This of course does not make much sense for an
18 year old to have a wife of 20 or more with a son 0-5.
Although I have not seen the census, on the same page, (530) is a
Abesolem Adams 30-40 with wife and 2 small children. I wonder if
perhaps Abesolem was father of my Washington Adams. Is there anyone out
there working on this family? Or, is there anyone who have suggestions
on tracing this? Thank you for your help.

I am searching the surname of WINDERS and McCANN in Owen Co.
Also is there a listing online of the cemeteries in Spencer Indiana .
Thank you
Cheri
aadcmom(a)aol.com
surnames: WINDERS, McCANN, LAWRENCE, BARBER,PHENIS,PUCKETT, HOBART, WILSON,
COFFEY,CARTER
Hicks, Beaman, Haltom, Reynolds and other families
are found in North Carolina in the 1700's. In the
1820's - 1830's many came to Owen, Clay, Putnam, and
Monroe Counties in Indiana. In the early 1850's
many went to Iowa and are found in such counties as
Adair, Clarke, Dallas, Decatur, Greene, Guthrie,
Lucas, Madison, Marion, Ringgold, and Union Counties
in South Central and West Central Iowa.
Iowa was opened for settlement in 1832; became a
State in 1846. In the late 1840's and early 1850's
the Mormans began their movement westward from
Nauvoo, Illinois, which is on the east bank of the
Mississppi River between Fort Madison and Keokuk,
Iowa. The move to Utah was across the State of
Iowa in the southern tier of counties. Some Mormans
stopped to rest at Pisgah which is in Union County.
Some stopped to rest at Kanesville, now Council Bluffs,
in Pottawattamie County on the Missouri River. I
have no idea about the route from Indiana to Iowa.
Perhaps some left Indiana, crossed Illinois, and came
into southern Iowa via the Morman Trail. Many Mormans
with hand carts crossed the Mississppi at Davenport and
rode the railroad to Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa - the
end of the line until after the Civil War. Perhaps some
from Indiana also crossed at Davenport, Iowa.
I defer to those with knowledge in migration routes.
Most of those who left North Carolina to Indiana to Iowa
were farmers. Many of those who left Indiana and unto
Iowa received land patents from the government for
$1.25 per acre.
i.e. - Iowa was a new place, a new time, and the price was
right for Iowa farm land.

I believe many people also left Owen County,
Indiana for the State of Missouri.
One way to get from Owen County, Indiana to
the State of Missouri is by river.
White River to Wabash River to Ohio River, and onto the
Missouri River at Saint Louis via the Mississippi River.
The Missouri River crosses Missouri westward from
Saint Louis to Kansas City.
