My family is William Hancock Jr. who was married to Sarah Asher. They came
from Jefferson Co. Kentucky to Owen County in the middle 1820's. Their
children were: Louisa, who married Daniel Thompson, Nancy, who married
Samuel Applegate, William Vardaman, who married Rhoda Dunnigan, Henderson who
married Lucy Jane Ray, and Taylor who married Lucinda Orear. William's
brother, Henry Hancock and Sarah's parents, John and Jane Asher also came
from Kentucky to Owen County at the same time. John Asher's brother was
Barlett Asher. They had several other family members in Owen Co. too. My
line continues with William's Jr.'s son, Henderson Sanders Hancock. They
left Owen County about 1855 to buy land and farm in Monroe County, Iowa and
nearby counties.

Hi Nancy,
I show a date of death on Nancy Childers (Childress) of 8 Feb 1863. Also show a first marriage for Susannan Ann bowen, dau of Nancy and John to Samuel Newton Fulk on 11 Mar 1876. Does this square with your info? Also show the second marriage to John W. Nations of 12 Oct 1889.
Found the info you were referring to on John Bowen as musician in Co. B. of 31st Indiana Volunteers on p. 645 of Owen history. Don't know how to square that with the pension application. These applications refer to John Bowen Jr. Each of the children under age 16 when John died - Jane, Sarah from first marriage,
John S. Florence Della, Arthur, and Frank from second marriage all have segments of the application. Each support document lists John Bowen as being in Co. E of the 149th Indianapolis Volunteers. However, my grandmother, Nellie Rose Bowen Robinson, also said that John was a musician in the Civil War. Issue is how
to reconcile these 3 pieces of info.

longer do the microfilm myself!

On the Owen Co census 1850 there is a John age 20 and Eliza Easton age 18
living with my ggggrandfather John B Taylor and his wife Delila. John
Easton was born in Kentucky as was John Taylor. Am thinking they are
related in some way. Anyone have some information in their files that
might help.
thanks Tom
I am looking for information on the family of Dr. Samuel R. McKELVEY born
April 1861 in Indiana, son of John McKelvey. I am particularly interested in
where and when Samuel died, where he is buried, and what happened to his
children.
On 22 Nov 1884 when Samuel R. was 23, he married Mary Ann RENTSCHLER,
daughter of Michael RENTSCHLER Sr. (1 Apr 1819-1893) & Elizabeth Catherine
SCHMALTZ (10 Nov 1825-1875), in Owen Co., Indiana. Mary Ann was born in 1865
in Owen Co., Indiana and died in Marion Twp., Owen Co., Indiana on 19 May
1891, when she was 26. She is buried in Liechty Cem., Clay City, Clay Co.,
Indiana.
Dr. Samuel and Mary Ann McKelvey had the following children:
i. Florence (1886-)
ii. Troy (1888-)
>From the 1900 Indiana Census, Owen Co., Marion Twp., ED 115, SH 1
McKelvey, Samuel R. Apr 1861 age 39 born in Indiana
Florence Apr 1886 age 14 born in Indiana
Troy V. Sep 1888 age 11 born in Indiana
If anyone has any knowledge of this family, I would certainly appreciate
hearing from you. Thank you!
John Klingler

Ron,
Do you know if the Sam Harger who married by 1872 to Mrs. Mary Kerr Gross
(daughter of John Kerr) was a brother to the Sedley Harger who married
Matilda Fender? David Fender's daughter Jane Mary married James I. Kerr,
brother of John Kerr.
Regards,
Edna
Thanks a lot for the information. I really appreciate it.
Ron Dowse.

Norma,
Thanks so much for the cemetery info on Winneta Harger. I didn't have her
exact birth date and did not have her death date, or where she was buried.
Also, thanks for the info on Thomas.
Regards,
Edna
I'm still checking on the Harger line. It is possible. Mine were from
Indiana and Nebraska. I will have to check in my FTM file and see what I've
got in there on the Harger's. I haven't been able to do much research on
them yet. I'll do some checking and get back to you.

One of my father's cousins married a Will Harger. The only thing I know
about him is that he started out in Missouri and died in Arcadia,
California abt. 1951. Could that be any relation, if so I can give you
what I know about his wife and child, my relatives.

Debbie, your "roll call" was a good idea. The response has been interesting.
Actually I'm researching the families I've named mostly in Monroe County (Van Buren Twp and Richland Twp), but because that is so very close to Owen County and because some of their descendants disappeared from Monroe, I've been keeping an eye on the Owen County list to see if by any chance some might turn up there.
Thomas Nesbit (b. 1769 in Cumberland Co, PA) and Constance Bennington (born in Maryland) married in KY in 1790 and moved their family to Monroe Co., IN in the mid-1820's. A daughter Rachel married James M. Foster in KY, and their son Thomas N. Foster married Elizabeth Oram in Monroe Co. in 1843. Thomas Nesbit lived to be 92 and is buried in Richland Cemetery, next to the Richland Christian Church, which he played a large part in establishing.
Absalom Baker and his wife, Harriet Gentry, married in NC in 1826 and very shortly moved to Van Buren Twp, Monroe Co, IN, near Stanford.
The William Freese family came to Bloomington around 1854 from England and Maryland, by way of West Virginia and Ohio.
If any of these names ring a bell with anyone researching in Owen County, I'd be happy to hear about it.
Oh, and thank you to whoever gave us the wonderful history of the Goss family of Gosport. I'd always wondered where that name came from. It always made me think of goslings, but now I'll have a different image.
