There is a Cane Creek Township, Orange County, North Carolina, from
which
came many of the early settlers of Orange County, Indiana came. Thus the
name. The connection of the name Cane Creek is much more "iffy" than the
Orange. There was definitely interaction of the Paoli group that came from
Cane Creek Township, North Carolina and the settlers of Jackson Township,
Orange County, Indiana. But, there was also "cane" growing out of the
creek
that is in close proximity to the church of that name. However, the place
name in Jackson Township was not Cane Creek but Iuke.(pronounced
"eye-oo-key")
On the subject of the origin of the Cox's. Thomas Cox the son of Charles
Cox
and Elizabeth Reece (Granny Wise) listed his birthplace alternatively in
the
census' of 1850 & 1860 as NC & SC. Mary Cox Flick his sister listed her
birthplace as NC, SC, SC, & NC respectivley in the census years 1850 -
1880.
The marriage of Charles and Elizabeth took place in Campbell county,
Virginia. I am not sure where the borders of that county were in 1791.
Today
it is a few hundred miles north of the North Carolina Border. Supposedly,
in
unconfirmed information, the Cox's (Charles parents etc.) may have lived
in
Campbell county prior to this marriage. But, both the children listed the
Carolina's as their brithplace. In 1796 the mother remarried, John George
Harmon in Nelson Co., Kentucky. Thus, the Cox's were from Virginia via The
Carolina's.
