ALEXANDER'S PAST REVEALED
Detroit, Nov 9--Robert Alexander, reported as a suicide at Hot Springs,
Ark., operated several gambling establishments in nightclubs in Detroit at
various times during the past 25 years, police disclosed.
Inspector Henry J. Garvin said Alexander spent a few days in Detroit last
summer and was without funds. It was reported he had suffered heavy
business losses.
Alexander's most recent business venture in Detroit was an establishment
that he closed in 1930. A club he operated in 1929 also was closed after
state police smashed its furnishings during a resort cleanup. A gambling
ledger seized during the raid contained the names of several prominent
Detroiters.
Garvin said he learned that Alexander and Ballard were joint operators of
gambling houses at French Lick and West Baden, Ind. A year ago Miami, Fla.,
police asked Detroit authorities for information about Alexander.
