ORANGE COUNTY
County Jail, Paoli-Visited September 17, 1913. Thomas A. Riester, Sheriff
Building-An old stone building, poorly lighted and ventilated. Four cells
for men, two rooms for women. Stoves; electric lights; city water. Four
closets in fair condition. The plumbing is old and reported in good repair.
No bathtubs. A washtub is used for bathing. The beds are iron bunks with
straw ticks, blankets and comforts. The bedding was not clean. The
blankets and comforts are washed only about once a year.
Management-No jailer. The work of the jail is done by the sheriff. No
printed rules. Tramps are not admitted.
Prisoners-Four men were present. Sexes separated. No classification. No
occupation. Prisoners usually change underclothes weekly but there is no
rule in regard to bathing. Three meals a day. The food is ample. No
religious services.
Improvements-No improvements have been made recently.
Recommendations-Better light and ventilation. A heating plant and bath
facilities are recommended. More attention should be given to the care of
the bedding. Paint would help the appearance of the jail.
Expenses for 1912-Repairs, $15.10; supplies, including fuel, light, water,
etc., $36.06; sheriff's fees, including boarding and care of prisoners,
$39.75; total, $490.90.
