FINDING OF AN ANCIENT GRAVE
Place of Burial of a Soldier Who Was Killed by the Indians
Paoli, Ind., May 7-The place of burial of Capt. William Charles, who was
killed at French Lick Springs in early days by the hostile Indians, was
discovered there recently by workmen who were digging a ditch in which to
lay water mains. For years only a cherry tree marked the resting place, but
the tree had been removed and the improvements at the place had entirely
obliterated the resting place of Capt. Charles.
History says that he was killed by the Indians in 1813 while plowing in a
field near the fort, the Indians creeping close to him from the adjoining
forest and shooting him from behind a stump. The rangers were away some
distance from the fort when he was shot and hastened to the scene and found
an arrow through one arm and several tomahawk holes in his hat, made in
attempting to scalp him. The wife of Charles died in a short time after with
a broken heart. After his death, she wore the hat which he had on at the
time.
